More help with Latin please

In Anton Chekhov's short story 'A Pink Stocking' a man severely criticises his wife his wife over a poorly written letter she has written, though he generally does not approve of women being learned.

When he thinks about it later the phrase 'audiatur et altera pars' goes through his mind. Google Translates this phrase as 'Let the other party', which makes no sense to me in the context of the story. 'On the other hand' would make more sense.

Is there a better translation of 'audiatur et altera pars'?

Probably "let the other side be heard as well". Also used in law

I think that would be logical since one of translations is

Sorry I couldn't help, the only latin (aside from spanish) I learned was from watching Road Runner cartoons.

Here's some basic latin vocabulary with audio assistance on cram. Many words with meaning in English.

It's not vocabulary that's the issue here, but grammar. Anyone can look up the meaning of individual words, but that doesn't mean you'll understand what the sentence means unless you're familiar with Latin grammar. For example, you need to recognise that "audiatur" is a passive verb form.

I'm about to go to the Deutches forum for help with a German proverb. Google translate and Collins dictionary give me the literal meaning of each word, but it makes no sense at all in the context.

Yes, word-by-word translations can be baffling. I'm reminded of one of those post-WW2 PoW reminscence books (about Colditz?) in which one PoW learning German would literally translate English idioms into German, to the bewilderment of the guards: eg (and this is the only example I can remember after all this time) "gebraunt weg". From the English "browned off."
