Paperwhite replacement.

So my kindle paper-white has a scratch, and because of how they're designed that means a bright light glaring through it whenever I use it; despite having a case and treating it with kid gloves it seems kindles really don't like me, this is my third kindle. Contacted support and despite my persistence all I was offered was 15% discount on yet another kindle, no thanks I'm done with Amazon.

I wonder if you can help me find a replacement, my priorities are firstly, something that doesn't break if looked at funny, so robustness, and secondly good text highlighting and export options. Half decent PDF support would be a nice bonus. Being able to draw on it or whatever I'm really not fussed about, that just sound like unnecessary cost, and in terms of size 6-9" would be ideal, certainly no bigger than 10".

What would you guys recommend?

A paper book.
Most e-readers are about the same as far as how they are put together.
I really don't know of any that meet all your requirements.

That was my concern. Honestly, I don't know how much more careful I could have been with it without rendering the product pointless. How do the various readers compare in terms of software then?

Kobos have more font options and are easier to put Koreader on for pdf reading.

Now if you are really concerned about damage, one word: Penguin. Note: The case will cost as much or more than an ereader.

I own several kindles and a kobo and they have not been treated with kid gloves. No cases, just drop them in my purse etc.
Now I did break a kindle keyboard or more precisely it didn't like a hot bubble bath.

KoReader does not work on an H2O2. But it does work on a KA1.

I once sat on a Sony PRS300. That wasn't good. that was when they were REAL expensive.

I've purchased a cheap case with a cover for my Paperwhite, and it works great in protecting my PW

I would recommend you switch to a tablet and get MoonReader Pro. I think you are either accident prone or far more rough on readers than you think. All of the ereaders have basically the same surface. I've a bunch of ereaders and only one had a damaged surface (I grabbed it to prevent it falling and damaged the screen). So, yeah, they don't take very much 'abuse' to damage.

As far as tablets, the Fire is the least expensive right now. Samsung would be your next bet.

The alternative is to stop buying new units. Get something used off Ebay or Craigslist. Then when it craps out because of whatever, you can move on to another used device. I get used units for my cousin's kid - she's careful with stuff, but it was in her bookbag and WHAM, one drop and it was done for. She felt awful (11 years old), but I just found her another deal with Woot and all is better. It's like kids and eye glasses.

I have to agree that the problem isn't with Kindle or Amazon. I currently have 4 Kindles, 4 Kobos and a Nook. I live in a retirement home and I'm always loaning a device to a neighbor with a book on it.

I've been reading on e-ink ereaders since 2009 and I've always owned a lot of them. I've had one get scratched when I lent it to a neighbor and her dog scratched it. It was still usable but Amazon replaced it. It was still in warranty. I told them it was a user fault and not a defect but they replaced it anyway.

I usually keep my readers in cases because I lend them out but I usually have the one I'm currently reading out of the case. I'm careful with it and I set it down on a flat surface, face down, so the screen is protected. I've never scratched one myself.

My suggestion is pick out a new ereader that you like, Kindle or not, and teach yourself better ways to be careful with it.

By the way, the screens on all e-ink readers are made by a company called E-Ink and not by the manufacturer of the reader itself. So they're all pretty much the same. They do have different grades but nearly all the current devices use the same grade of screen.

I've had a lot of eReaders go through my hands (still have several older ones, but many have been given away or sold). I've never broken a screen. But I always find cases for them. I learned that lesson with the first eReader I owned, a Nook Simple Touch. While it was almost new, I dropped it about 5 feet off the fireplace mantle, and it careened of the brick of the raised hearth and skidded across the stone floor. It got nicked on one side, but was otherwise in perfect condition (I still have it and use it). That's when I decided that I would get a case. Since then just about every eReader that has passed through my hands has left with a case. M-Edge cases were really cheap when Staples was clearing them out (and so were Amazon and Nook branded cases) – a dollar or two each. You can still find nice Kindle cases cheap on eBay (especially if you don't mind olive colored leather).

I used a Sony PRS-T1 for five years. Kept it in the Sony case except when reading at home on my couch. I am pretty klutzy, dropped it numerous times and since the case didn't fasten, sometimes it would land face down with the case open. Eventually I was reading at my desk one day during a work break and something heavy fell on it from the hutch above the desk, causing a 1/8-inch divot in the screen. Despite all of that, it still works! Of course it doesn't have a built-in light so I didn't have the glare issue. So it is possible to be a klutz and drop your reader numerous times without destroying it.

The 2 reasons I switched over to the T3 I had in reserve were 1) increasing amount of dictionary lockups on the T1; and 2) Overdrive library stopped working on T1 after Overdrive's last major overhaul. These were both software issues though, not anything to do with the physical condition of the device.

Someone upthread suggested buying used readers - probably not a bad idea if you are truly accident-prone. Besides ebay, elsewhere in these forums I've seen several people report they got really cheap used readers from Goodwill's online store (if you are in the US).
