Update calibre with new book/cover w/o losing tags

Hi there

When I download an updated book from amazon (eg. With a new cover) on my kindle calibre no longer shows it as having a “matching” book in my library (with a green tick), I assume because the metadata has changed. I know I can manually match each with a book in my library to make the teen tick appear. However I’d like to import the updated book/cover into calibre but keep my tags assigned to the previous version of the book in my library. Is there a way of doing this? Or is it best just to import and then manually do a merge for each duplicate copy? If so, which merge function do I use to make sure I keep the cover etc from the “new” version....

My way:
Open the MDE on the old book

1) Drag the new book FILE into the formats box
2) select the format, then click the blue book to the left (extracts the cover)
3) OK

Thank you, sounds good (albeit time consuming for ~100 books!)
