Difficulty updating M96 Universe

Hi All,

I have a Boox M96 Universe for my studies and I have a few books that I would like to start reading casually, Its current build is:
Android 4.0.4

Kernel
3.0.35

Build
2014-09-12_00-43_1.6.2_041be89
I cannot update the Firmware from the internet anymore and the latest 1.8.2 Firmware from ereader-store.de is not recognised when in the root of my device.

Is it possible to upgrade my Boox M96 anymore? If it requires flashing manually, can anyone point me to the instructions to do so.

Thanks

Rob

You could try the following:

For myself I update using the mfg tools from Booxter's store (https://ereader-store.de/en/content/8-downloads). You'd need Windows for this last one.

is there a successful work around for this ?

Ok

I kind of got things moving along, I got MfgTool to pick up my Boox but after 10 hours of doing its stuff, it failed to write the image, I thought this would have bricked my Boox but to my surprise it loaded up fine and still has the original firmware on it along with my old books.

Can you please confirm is I am following the steps correctley:

1. Install adb driver
2. Restart PC
3. Connect Boox to PC with developer mode enabled
4. Run command prompt with the following command: adb reboot download (device reboots but its not obvious its in download mode?)
5. Run MfgTool2 from the "M96_2017-05-03_04-07_1.8.2_e54efe5_user" downloaded package
6. Check that device is picked up as "Composite USB Device"
7. Click Start

Also is the firmware for 1.8.2 included with the MfgTool package?

Sorry to sound like such an amateur, I very rarely go round rooting / flashing devices, I'm only doing this because I have lost the functionality of the Play store and Boo store from the Universe firmware!

Thanks

Rob

Sorry for not responding earlier.

Win8.1 & 10 had issues with laptops and adb. The way I normally did things:
-Click start menu
-enter settings
-click update & security
-Click recovery
-click 'restart now'
-After the circling dots thing it asks you to choose an option on a blue screen. Select troubleshoot, then advanced options
-Click Startup Settings, then restart. It'll reboot and give you a menu.
-Type the number beside 'disable driver signature enforecement'
-Once it finishes booting install the drivers that come with the mfgtool2 package

Normally I put my device into the developer mode but I don't plug it into the system until after I have started mfgtool2. It usually shows up quickly and doesn't take long to do the update.

Mfgtool2, at least in the past, includes both firmware and driver.

If play store is your issue you can also try googling 'gapps 4.0.4' or 'gapps ics'. You might be able to just install google's apps, but you'd probably have to do it via adb anyway, so you'd have to install the drivers. I'm not sure if there's an apk package you can just install.
