Removing recommended books from home page - Kobo Aura 2

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help. I have been trying to remove the recommended books icon from the home page of my Kobo Aura 2 H2O.

I have tried the long press to open a dialogue menu but this does not work for that icon. I am able to do so for the book I am reading and my books icons, so it is not a problem with the long press. Also the long press had worked on my Kobo Aura 1 (which I accidentally dropped and broke; that model is no longer available in local stores). However, Kobo seems to have disabled this function for the recommended books on the Aura 2. I would still like to remove them from my homepage.

I had asked Kobo Help on their website. They responded with a mean trick to me. Following their instructions deauthorized and reset my reader. I then had to go to a lot of trouble to get the device reauthorized so that I could download and read books (my original log-in was so old I could not remember the original password). I then had re-run the entire set-up process of my device. After all of that, the recommended book list was still on my home screen

Now, the reader has gratuitously added a new recommended list based on the author of the book that I am currently reading. Again, the long press does not work to dismiss this icon.

PLEASE could someone tell me how to remove these recommended books lists from the homepage of my e-book reader?

Thank you!

The answer is simple: Put some books on the device and read.

The current home page is not configurable by the user. There are six regions on it and they get different things in them. The left side is fairly fixed. The right side changes. The recommendations are either in the top right or the middle right. The top right will show books if you have three or more opened. Both can also be occupied by an author or a collection. Exactly what depends on your usage. As you put more books on the device and read, the recommendations will probably be replaced by either an author or a collection.

I use Pocket quite extensively and Articles never appear on the Home screen which aggravates me.

For me, Articles appear in the bottom right. I think it normally turns up when a sync download a new article or two.

Wow! Wish that worked for me. As much as I use Pocket it never appears anywhere on the home screen and I sync with Pocket several times a day.
Right now on the bottom of the screen I have, Find Your Next Great Read AND the Aura Hd manual! The manual popped up there recently, perhaps after the last firmware update. Haven't looked at the manual in forever. I do not know of any settings I can use to force the Articles to appear there.

Now I don't know if I feel foolish or perplexed. I powered off my Aura HD. Powered on and in lower right screen were articles. So I selected that read some articles. Upon going back to Home screen the Articles were gone, replace by Kobo trying to sell me something. Powered off, powered on... and articles were back and the same experience as above. So the Articles are not sticky in my case.

It is completely possible on Powering on I never noticed the articles on the home page and then after reading some articles it was gone. I leave my reader in Sleep mode quite a bit, not powering off that often. So I wish Articles could be made sticky on the home screen.

For me, the contents of the lower right corner cycle through the options pretty much at random. I've found no way at present to make the contents sticky or force to the next.

Thank you that helped. I have managed to open enough books to bump off the icon for the author. The recommended reads got bumped down to the lower right. Unfortunately, I do not have enough active books currently on my reader to open any more. Next time I borrow a bunch from the library I will try again. (Kobo can advertise to me through 'recommended reads' all they want - though I wish they would stop - but I never buy e-books. I only get them from the library).

I am hoping, however, that there is a more permanent solution than continuous bumping of the icon. I would like to just clear it off my homepage altogether.

As for articles - I have never read them on my read so do not know how those icons work.

You could always get a bunch of free ebooks from a site like Gutenberg.org. They have plenty of classics which are absolutely free. That might be preferable to seeing what Kobo suggests to you.

The number of opened books only affects the top row. And once you have three open, that prevents anything else from occupying the top-right spot. For me, the middle-right changes between an author and a collection. The author will be for the book I am reading or recently finished and will show if there is at least one more book by the author to read.

The rules for the collection are similar, but I never see large collections, such as my "ToRead" collection, so it might include a size factor in the rules.

Curious, I only see large collections as my ToBeRead or Read collection, the Reading collection never appears, and I'm almost always rotating between those three.

Well, apparently my Aura ONE reads MR. After posting the above, the next time I saw the home screen, it had the ToRead collection! And it's gone through the other large collections since.

This might fit the pattern. The last few books I have read were either the only books I had for the author, or the last unread. It's likely the only collection containing the book was one of the large ones. It might be picking the smallest collection with the book, or the collection with the fewest unread. So if there is a series collection, that tends to get displayed as I frequently have the next book waiting to be read.

I don't see why this is a big deal since you can bypass the home screen and go straight to your library from whatever book you're reading.

Also the home screen has always had a recommended tile. You could dismiss it but every sync would bring it back.

Just seems to me something I use multiple times every day should be reflected by placement on the Home screen. I see my Aura HD manual in the lower right corner of the screen considerably more often than my Articles and I don't know the last time I opened the manual.

Oh well, just venting.

Project Gutenberg is an e-book pioneer and gutenberg.org is a great resource, but I think most people would agree that when a version of a book is available at both sites, the version at mobileread is better.
