You need to provide more information about how you expect to connect, and what reading app you want to use.

Apple iOS devices have not been able to make a successful connection to Calibre via USB for some time (since around the introduction of iOS 8 I think). This is due to the way that Apple locks down devices.

The only way to connect is via WiFi. To do that you need an appropriate app on the iPad that connects to the Calibre server (or an equivalent). I personally use the Marvin app connected to a Calibre2opds generated catalog that I host on my NAS, although I can also connect to the Calibre server on my PC if I want to.

You have to roll back the iOS version on your device and iTunes version on your PC/Mac. I am not sure this is practical (or even technically doable).

The OP may want to look at Calibre Companion as they can do a direct wireless connection to Calibre on their computer (or to the server) if for some reason they don't want to use Calibre's server or their reading app of choice doesn't support connection itself.
