I've also seen EPUB referred to as a "universal" format since it can be read on a variety of devices from many manufacturers, versus the Amazon Kindle "exclusive" formats.

It's not strictly accurate, but I've seen the term used that way.

I think that's related to the myth that epub is somehow the standard and Kindle formats are non-standard. In fact the mobi format was around for several years before epub, more books are sold in Kindle formats by far than in epub, and mobi books are available from a lot of sources, not just from Amazon.

The fact is that there is no standard format for ebooks and if you just have to pick one Kindle formats are the more likely choice.

Well, Billy, you must try to understand that a universal epub is one which also loads onto a Kindle. That way, Billy, epubs will then be universally recognized as the file-type of choice. One can only hope that this will happen soon.

That depends a lot on language. It might be true for the English language, but it most certainly isn't true for the Dutch language!
