Screen stuck at last read PDF via Koreader - no way to reset
Hello guys,
It's been a while since I've last used my Kobo Aura H2O so I decided to turn it on again. As expected, the first thing I saw was the cover of the last PDF I viewed. I plugged it into my computer, waited a bit, and nothing happened. Then I pressed the reset button hoping that it would soft restart but again, the screen remained the same. Even after pressing the reset button four times nothing happened. What I noticed is that the backlight works so it doesn't seem to be completely dead. I even managed to let my computer recognize it by plugging it in and tapping around the area where it would normally say "Connect". I'm out of ideas now and waiting for a feedback from Kobo. However I wanted to ask you guys too, maybe there's something else I can do. Thanks! |

Usually when the display is stuck with one picture (while backlight turns off and on as you power off/on the device), it's a broken display substrate...
![]() ![]() Is there any visual damage on the screen, such as stripes, black/white inverted areas, ...? Post a photo |

Interestingly this is my second device and the first one had the issue you've described (stripes on display). This one seems different as I can't see any abnormalities on the display. The cover of the book is supposed to look like that because it's a scan.

Hmmm. Well, it doesn't look like a broken substrate... that said, we had cases of broken displays w/o visible damage before. Did you do anything strange, like update firmware manually with the wrong files? Basically a bad kernel is the only thing I can think of that would make it boot yet not update the display at all.
You can try to force a factory reset [deleted vidme link] Or since you can still mount it, try to put an official firmware for H2O on it and see if that solves/changes things in any way. If that doesn't work either you could replace the SD card (but opening the H2O, due to a ton of glue used, is also prone to cause display breakages). And while its open check that the display cable didn't come loose somehow. Did you use it in the bath? Water can cause all sorts of odd damage too, and H2O despite its name is not really waterproof. Looking at that, I tend to agree with frostschutz. It looks like there is something wrong with the screen. And if the light is turning on and off as you press the reset button, the device isn't frozen. The reset button is restarting the device and that turns the light off, and then somewhere in the startup, the light is turning on.
You sent me a PM asking for an image, and I will send this. But, you should try a manual factory reset first. For the Aura H2O, this is done by: - Charge the device for at least an hour. - Hold the power button down for 20 seconds to force the device to turn on. - While holding the power button down, tap both bottom corners. - Keep tapping until the screen changes or the LED next to the power button changes. Getting the timing right can be a problem. If it doesn't trigger the factory reset, try again. If that doesn't help, I don't expect the image will help either. But, it won't harm to try it. |

Nothing helped unfortunately, but it seems like I managed to initiate a repair/exchange. I'm waiting for the support's response.
