Fried - will not recharge

Hi Guys

Can anyone help please?

I have just come back from holiday where I was reading my T1 in the sunshine. It must have got too hot as a warning message flashed up about the temperature and it shut down. I put it away and now that I'm home in cooler weather, I am trying to resurrect the reader.

Is simply will not charge. I can use it whilst plugged into mains but the minute I umplug it, it freezes with the low battery warning.
I have done hard resets, soft resets, left charging overnight on wall socket, tried plugging into the computer where it is not recognized.....

I'm at the point of opening it up to try to replace the battery but do not really want to do so.

Does anyone have any ideas or has the sun killed the battery circuit?

Thanks

PRS-T1s are end of life anyway, because of the battery age - they've been dying for a year or so now, perhaps longer. I was unable to resurrect a relative's device quite a while ago.

I don't know how much a new battery costs, but do you have enough to consider a new reader? They really have come a long way since then.

Have you tried a reboot of it? Do a device shutdown and see if that might help it. Otherwise, it really is at the end of its battery life and getting too hot might have just done the battery in.

Thanks both for your advice. I have rebooted it, Hemmi.
I can get a battery for around £8 so I'm going to give that a try. I would like to get a new reader but feel I ought to go with the cheaper route first.....
I have found a copy of the service manual plus there are a couple of youtube videos on how to replace the battery so will have a go and report back on th results for anyone who may be interested.

Sounds like it's worth a try since it's dead now.

You can get Sony's secondhand. Your reference to pounds though makes me suspect you're not in the US though. Still, Ebay is a good source if you want another Sony. I'm addicted to them myself and stocking up.

Yes I'm in UK. You're right about Ebay - that was my first port of call. The TRS range are a bit few and far between on UK site but I am watching two right now!

*knock on wood* All of my Sony's still work. PRS 650 that I bought 5+ years ago, T1 that I bought about a year ago, T3 that I got about 6 months ago, and T2 that I just got in the last week couple of weeks.

Please let us know how this works out. A lot of us are eyeballing replacement batteries at this point.

Will you be installing it yourself? Looks kind of fiddly from the pictures I've seen.

The "urban knowledge" is that Li batteries (rechargeable) last for some 5 years. I have tools older than 5 years and still have a good load - by comparison, the older NiCd one were always empty when I needed them even before this time

Will soon be getting a PRS 900, excited to get a Sony with a larger screen. I think my collection might be complete now!

Well I'm really pleased to report that my reader is fixed and fully charged and working standalone without being plugged in.

I did replace the battery myself - it was fiddly and it took time to prise open the case and also to desolder and resolder the battery connections. However, the sense of achievement more than makes up for the effort expended!

The 2 PRS-T1s that I was watching on Ebay sold for silly money anyway. My £8 was well spent!

Soldering a circuit board is probably something I couldn't do, does it look like you could clip the wires and just solder the new battery to the old wires in that way?

Haha I didn't think I could do it either - that's why I'm feeling smug and pleased!

Yes you could probably clip the wires and reattach a ney battery as there is enough lengh on them. The lid of the reader fits very snugly where the battery is so you need to make sure the battery is properly seated and there is nothing proud ot the battery - so the wires need to be tucked down.

I've attached an image of what the connection looks like.
