Null in Date Column?

Is there a way to return a custom date column to null? I have a "date started" and "date finished" column, but if for any reason I touch them in Calibre, they automatically insert today's date. But often that is NOT what I want. I haven't actually started reading the book yet!

@CRussel - in the book list, press F2 in the date cell, then '-' and 'Undefined' should appear. In metadata data edit (single and bulk), the columns should have a Clear <whatever> button.
