The perfect ereader
Having owned several ereaders over the years, beginning with the Franklin EBookman, I have my own ideas about what features would make an ereader 'perfect' for me. I'm sure you do, too, so I thought I'd start this thread so we all could share what we would consider 'perfect'.
Eink screen (of course), Carta or better The same weight and measurements of the Sony PRS-T1 SIDE PAGE TURN BUTTONS, or a rocker wheel on the side - I really, really, really want thoughtless, easy, one-handed page turning. Buttons on the bezel or the bottom of the reader don't work for me - I want that button under my forefinger or thumb so I can just press and read. Long battery life A front light The same ability to change fonts, size, line spacing, etc. that the Kobo readers have The same dictionaries that the Sony readers had So what would your 'perfect' reader be? |

The screen and contrast of the Kindle Voyage
The shape and weight of the Kindle Oasis (and its page-turn buttons) The option to use page-turn buttons during text search The font options of Kobo readers A bit more even frontlight than the current Kindles have Fingerprint-resistant bezels (don't particularly like skinning) Long battery life is always a good thing, but I never take my readers outside, so charging them is not all that bothersome. The Oxford dictionaries on my Kindles are very good, I'm happy with them. |

Hardware wise, the Kobo Aura One is it.
Software wise, the Kobo Aura One comes closest. |

The screen size of the Kobo Aura One.
The screen and contrast of the Kindle Voyage The shape of the Kindle Oasis (and its page-turn buttons) The walnut leather cover of the Oasis. More than just the font options of Kobo readers, I would like the relative openness of the Kobo ereaders. Moon Reader Plus as the reader software. The autolight options of the Voyage and/or Aura One. Waterproof, dustproof. Flush screen. Overdrive support. Multi store support. On board wireless Calibre support. |

The Kindle Voyage has pretty much reached my level of perfection. The only improvement would be an option for a slightly bigger screen (as I have more vision problems, I need to make the text larger). The longer battery life and the adaptable lighting, buttons and such has just made it fabulous.
Yes, there are other options available, but I clearly am not needing those. |

Hardware:
6.8in. frontlit e-ink screen, recessed with infra-red touch. Minimum 16GB onboard storage (or option to expand, such as SD card slot.) Minimum battery life sufficient for 24 hours reading over 3-4 days (the more the better.) Software: Able to read ebooks from my local public library (i.e. Adobe DRM ePubs.) Able to install extra fonts on device, as well as support multiple embedded fonts in ebooks. Able to use font features such as ligatures and kerning for installed and embedded fonts. Able to adjust font weight and sharpness (anti-aliasing level) independently. Able to display fully-justified text with automatic hyphenation. Able to display ebooks full-screen (nothing but book content on screen.) Able to adjust line spacing in increments of one pixel down to zero spacing. Able to adjust top/bottom and left/right page margins down to zero margin. Able to adjust font height in increments of one pixel. My current reader is almost perfect, only its 6in. screen is slightly smaller than ideal. |

I have several different ereaders. The "perfect" one is the one I have with me when I have time to read.
(I'm not very demanding.) |

There will never be a "perfect" eReader because everyone has their own definition of what a perfect eReader is.

For my tastes: Oasis Form factor and screen with a plastic substrate and a higher capacity battery. Could be Kindle or open Android. Don't care either way.

The perfect eReader for me really does depend on where I am at.
I prefer the larger screen for in home reading, so I use an iPad Pro for that. I like being able to read without reading glasses. I prefer a medium sized screen for reading on the go, i.e. at lunch. I use an iPad Mini for that. I have an eInk reader (Sony T3, but just bought a Kindle paperwhite) for camping and backpacking. I like the very long battery life, small size and light weight. Since the iPad screen doesn't fatigue my eyes, I prefer the active color screen to the eInk screen. For some reason, I find that I like to read with a light blue background and white letters. Of course, in an ideal world, a eReader that only had to be charged once a month, was full color and was resizable. Might be a while before that sort of eReader becomes available. Oh yea, it has to be able to hold all my ebooks and have good book management. |
