Power managment - sleep mode vs shutting down

Hello.

I'd like to know if it's better to save power to use sleeping mode or to shut down the device (or use auto shut down).

In my understanding, in sleep mode the eReader doesn't use much power. Booting must use some power, isn't it?

In your opinion, is it worth it to completely power off the device?
Would an auto shutdown after an hour for example, be interesting to save power and have better battery life?

Thanks

I just let mine sleep unless I won't be using it for more than a month.

On my Sony PRS 950s, I always let them go to sleep automatically so as to not wear out the Off/On switch.

On my PRS T1, I came to realize the battery life was shorter when allowed to power down automatically, so I always used the Off/On switch.

I think the general consensus is that unless you're not going to be using it for a couple of weeks or more that it will take more power to allow it to fully power down and restart it each time than just letting it sleep.

I let mine sleep... because poweroff after an hour is annoying (the default max setting aside from never?)

There is no option to power off after a week of standby... if there was I would use it.

That's what you'd need in case - you get busy with other stuff, don't use it for a long while, and forget to turn off the reader yourself.

In standby mode sooner or later the device will run out of battery entirely and die. That's not good for the battery for one thing and the reader won't be ready to use when you pick it up again for another, it takes hours charging first (ofc you can read with charger cable attached).

This isn't really a problem for me but my mother who also has a H2O but only uses it sporadically...

I'm considering writing a mod that powers off the device once battery levels drop below a certain threshold (e.g. 50%) but that, too, only works when the reader actually wakes from standby... not sure how often it wakes, it does manage to display a battery warning before running out entirely but...

You have the patch `Custom Sleep/Power-off timeouts` in Metazoa patchs to increase the time, i set mine to 4 hours.
I didn't try change the the numbers in the patch, but i don't see a problem to increase the time to days or a week.
EDIT:The maximum is 4 hours, That is limitation of the patch.

How match of hours in sleep mode equal one reboot?

Thanks for your answers.

I'm not afraid to wear out the Off/On switch, and I don't mind waiting a few seconds while the device boots before being able to read (but would rather not boot it several times a day. 4 to 24h before shutting down would be better, I don't know why they limit this to 1h!)).

In most cases it would be down for 8 to 15 hours per night before being all day either in use or in sleeping mode.

I guess the real question is:

I'll check the patch though.

Looking for the patch I did read that:

I think someone looked a patching this, but they couldn't do any better than this.

I suspect 255 is the maximum, not sure why I tried 250 (although another 5 minutes wouldn't make that much difference anyway).

If I'm not mistaken, with the current firmware, if you set this by editing the config file on the device, the next time you change settings on the screen that lists this setting, I think it resets it back to the UI defaults, and you have to edit it again. Older firmwares left it alone.
The OP did some testing in this thread, and reports that he had longer reading time between charges with auto shutdown after 30 minutes...
