New guy needs basic help with Calibre

Hi Folks,

Please excuse my basic lack knowledge about Calibre but I could use some help getting started. I have been downloading audio books from the Phoenix library for years and life has been good but now my wife has her Kindle Paper White that I need help with. What I am trying to do is download epub books and convert them to mobi and put them on her kindle thru amazon.

What I have done so far is.... downloaded the epub book using overdrive on my windows 10 pc onto ADE. My question is... How do I use Calibre to grab the book from ADE so Calibre can do its thing to change the file format to MOBI?

Thanks,
John

Unfortunately you're in a very BLACK area here; books from the library have DRM on them, and MobileRead does not condone in any way, shape or form discussion of removing DRM from library books.

DRM on material you've purchased we'd refer you to Apprentice Alf and thats as far as I will go.

Thanks.....I think

So what you are saying is that there is no way to download a book from my library as an authorized user and convert the format so I can read it on my Kindle?

So another alternative would be to buy a hand held epub reader if such a thing exists?

Appreciate your help,
John

Not necessarily. Discussion of how to do DRM removal is not allowed at MobileRead. And removal of DRM from library books tends to be frowned on or gets you called a pirate. But, we can tell you that there are DRM removal tools at https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/. I don't know if these work on the library books as I have never tried.

Yes, ADE readers do exist. But you might ask your Librarian why they don't support Kindles This isn't 2010. There are Kindles every where.
My local Library started supporting Mobi a few years ago (but they still have the same problem. The book is not available WHEN I want to read it )

The Greater Phoenix Digital Library lends kindle books. No need for DRM removal.

ETA: Publishers are reluctant to make e-books available at libraries. Public discussion of removing DRM from them will only make them more so and harms your fellow library patrons.

I've found that most books are available for Kindle checkout, if not immediately then shortly after the original Overdrive release.

Of course, that assumes you are using a US library (which Phoenix is), and that they went with OverrDrive rather than 3M or Axis360...

The Pendergast series is not available for Kindle but is for most others including audio.

Have you read Butcher's latest book? The Aeronaut's windless. Not as good as the Dresdon files series but it has some possibilities.

I just looked at what the Phoenix library has for the Pendergast series. For the ones they have as eBooks (they have books 1-12 & 15) only one book, Relic, is not available as a Kindle book. The two books they're missing, 13 & 14, are also available through OverDrive (& Kindle), but Phoenix library hasn't purchased copies of those for whatever reason. No idea why the publisher has chosen to not make Relic available as a Kindle book.

All told Phoenix has 3,803 books in DRM'd ePub & 3,535 in Kindle format.

Your right. I must have pushed the wrong button when looking before. I see 12 books of the series available but the first, Relic, is missing.

Thanks for pointing that out to me.
