Hi from Australia via Baghdad

Hi all,

I am a voracious reader and bought the Sony Bookreader so that I could read heaps of books whilst posted in Baghdad (in the quiet moments) Unfortunately I did not look close enough at the terms and conditions, and now find I cannot buy the books from the Sony site becuse I am not US based. Ive tried Gutenberg but I want the later books as recently published. So I have ordered a different reader from Bookeen in France, and am awaiing its delivery, In the meantime I am reading on the laptop, via mobipocket. Does anyone have any suggestions for a way around the Sony problem.

Cheers

Welcome.

First of all, you are better off with the Cybook. It's the better device.

One way you might get around the restrictions on the Sony Reader is to buy MSReader LIT format and convert it. You will need two things to do this: ConvertLIT and libprs500. You can find both through Google.

You should also look at our collection of ebooks formatted for the Sony Reader, and www.blackmask.com.

Still in Baghdad?

Hello, and I have to say it's a pleasant surprise seeing someone else listing Baghdad on here. I've several months to go over here, and I'm looking at a few different models, particularly the Iliad. Can you share some of your experiences using an eBook over here? Any maintenance issues I should be aware of before having one shipped out here?

Two places you can now get ebooks for your Sony are www.fictionwise.com (not all books can be had in the Sony format so check them closely) and www.baen.com. Baen also has a "free library". Baen is mostly SF and Fantasy. Most of the SF is militarily oriented.

Hi,

Sorry I have only just read your message. No I have returned to Australia. I have done two tours and that is enough for me (however Kabul might be coming up)

As far as the readers are concerned I have the Iliad, the Bookeen, and the Sony PRS500. They are all excellent and there were no problems with them or with purchasing and downloading books.
The pick of them is the Sony because it is faster than the others to load and to use. However the Sony was broken on my return so I shall buy a PRS505, particularly as they now support Adobe and ePub formats.

The Iliad software for handwriting recognition does not work properly on Vista and is clumsy to use, but as a straight out reader it is good. The Bookeen is the slimmest of the lot and both the Bookeen and the Sony batteries last a very long time, the Iliad only about 15 hours.

Where are you from? which did you buy
Once again sorry for the delayed response.

Cheers
John

Actually, I have to highly disagree. I think the Sony Reader PRS-500 is better then the Gen3.

Can't agree with you there, Jon. One might argue, depending on personal taste, that the 505 is on a par with the Gen3, but I'm surprised that you think the 500 is. Don't you think that the VizPlex screen of the Gen3 alone makes it much better?
