Hello. Can someone help me in the following annotation strange behavior?
Every time I insert a new annotation, all the chapters information from my previous annotations (in the same ePub) are changed to the last chapter annotation I inserted. For example, if I have 3 annotations from chapters 1, 2 and 3 each and I make an annotation in chapter 8, all the previous 3 annotations info is changed to chapter 8. ![]() Thank you so much for any help. |

That's a known bug but you have the wrong cause. The correct chapter is being lost when you reopen the book.
The problem is that the annotations can be stored in two places. They are in the database on the device, and for epubs and PDFs on the main memory, they are also in a file. When an epub or PDF in the main memory is opened, any annotations in the file are merged with those in the database. Unfortunately, this is done in such a way that the chapter information is lost and set to whatever chapter the book gets opened to. This is a long standing bug that Kobo definitely know about. There is a work-around. The annotation files are in the directory named "Annotations" within the directory "Digital Editions". If you replace the directory "Annotations" with a file of the same name, the problem will disappear. |

I davidfor and thank you for your suggestion.
Nevertheless I deleted the Annotation folder in the main memory and tried replacing with different files types (.txt .png .jpg and an .app - It is connected to a Mac) but Kobo always manages to create the folder anyway. Maybe it's because I'm on a Mac... Any suggestion for a file type...? Thank you! |

The contents of the file is unimportant. You just need a file called "Annotations". No extension and the case is important. I don't normally use, but I just created an empty file with that name, and it is working as desired.

On a mac it's not straightforward to delete the extension from the file name because the system assumes as if you are just hiding it form the name. But somehow I managed to workaround and now annotations behaves as expected!
Thank you very, very much davidfor! ![]() |

hello Davidfor and the others,
I have a question related to the precedent problem: I had the same problem mentioned by LuisG, and I applied the solution you proposed. Nevertheless, before that, I took a big number of annotations/highlights in several books (more than 300... for my work ), and they all display "0% into chapter" but when I use on my kobo Aura , they all send me on the right place in the book when i click on it. The problem is the following, when I transfer my annotations with calibre (Fletch annotation) or/and with the plugin "annotation" in Calibre, I have all my annotations written at 0%, and theb I lost the precious location of my annotations/highlights... Because I am able to reach the correct location when I use my kobo, the information of the annotation's location must be written somewhere (even it 's display 0% into chapter), so How can I retrieve this essential information when I export my annotations ? Thanks a lot in advance if somebody find a (clever or not :-) )solution to this, because after looking everywhere I got lost and worried that all my annotation/highlights work is lost... Thanks again Ioul |

The chapter title could be restored fairly easily, but the percentage would be a lot harder.
The database stores the link to the chapter and when the annotation list is displayed, this is used to get the chapter name from elsewhere in the database. This could be fixed with a little fiddling. The percent into the book is store as a number. When this gets set to zero, it would have to be recalculated by processing the book. There is probably a method in calibre to do it, but, I have never looked into it. |

hmm ok, I see. Thank you for you answer. Restore the chapter will be better than nothing. have I to look intot the database files to find them ?
I do have a backup copy of my .annot from the annotations folder (The one I replaced to fix the bug). From this is there something which contain the location ? I am thinking about the values : "(/1/4/2/2/4/34/1:385)" end="OPS/main7.xml#point(/1/4/2/2/4/34/1:531)" ? from the .annot files: <annotation> <dc:identifier>urn:uuid:0bc5a99c-2842-4f80-bf6d-80a014b6a3ba</dc:identifier> <dc:date>2015-08-23T22:40:33Z</dc:date> <target> <fragment start="OPS/main7.xml#point(/1/4/2/2/4/34/1:385)" end="OPS/main7.xml#point(/1/4/2/2/4/34/1:531)" progress="0"> <text> my text annotated....</text> </fragment> </target> <content> <dc:date>2015-08-23T22:40:33Z</dc:date> </content> </annotation> |
