Save to disk

There is something I don't understand about the "save to disk" feature. Why is it, that when I save an epub onto the disk, it splits up my file. Namely, I get three files inside a directory: the epub, the cover image, and the metadata opf.

Why the sudden split? Is it not possible to make a single file out of it or am I simply not seeing it? Can't seem to find anything.

Preferences ==> Saving books to disk

Uncheck "Save cover separately"
Uncheck "Save metadata in a separate OPF file"
MAKE SURE "Update metadata in save copies" is (still) checked

...
...

It is done by default for backup and redundancy reasons.

Also, because while EPUB allows any namespaced metadata in the OPF, other formats use a set list of fields (e.g. mobi headers).
Some formats don't support updating covers at all -- EPUB and AZW3 both do though.

How the heck did I not see that one in the preferences? It's embarrassing how long I've been trying to find something without success.

Don't feel bad about not seeing it -- there's a lot of options.
We're used to enumerating them.
