Calibre not seeing new books

I have been having a number of issues with Calibre since moving from my old, now dead, Kindle keyboard to a Paperwhite. There are things I like a lot about the Paperwhite, but there have been a number of compatibility issues with software.

Today, I plugged in the PW and went to the Device and none of the 5 books downloaded since 21 September were visible. I could see them on the PW itself, but not in the device view from Calibre. I ended up downloading the books in Kindle for PC and adding them to Calibre that way, and then I went back to plug in the Kindle again and they were there, but with odd bits like only the author's first name. I was able to match them to the library and make them look reasonable.

Then, there was one book which seemed slightly older that was not in the library and tried to add it, but it told me it was KFX format or something and a virtual book which could not be loaded. I forced a new download from Amazon, getting a second copy, but still could not load it into the library. I downloaded it from Kindle for PC and added it to Calibre from there and then was able to match it to get it connected. I could read the book on the PW.

What is all of this?

Download direct to your PC

Many devices have Walled storage areas for Walled Garden purchases, that are not visible externally.

The problem with downloading to Kindle for PC is that Most Recent is when accessed, not when purchased, so there is no easy way to see the last N books one bought. Instead, one has to go to Amazon and look at the list and then do searches to find each book and then open the book to force the download, which updates the access date and page. This is ***way*** inferior to simply opening the device and seeing the N most recent downloads.

Amazon have started delivering books in formats that cannot be added directly to calibre to their Kindle devices. You have to either download the books via Manage my content on amazon.com or using Kindle for PC. That is the price to be paid when using a walled garden.

The exact same thing applies to Kindle devices the Cloud view is sorted by recently viewed.

The fact that books are automatically downloaded to the device when you buy it merely means you need to stop relying on the direct-to-device-purchase integration as a convenient way to see recently-purchased.
And I can't rely on that anyway, since I am liable to read books in between purchasing and connecting my Kindle to the computer.

You can set Kindle for PC as your default device when purchasing from the website.
