Are 'positions' in viewer based on word count?
If so, how many words = 1 position? And if not what exactly is one position measured by? Is position 100 to 110 necessarily equal to 200 to 210 in terms of words/characters/sentences/or..?

No, and if you want the exact algorithm, you'd have to read the source. Positions are not related to anything directly observable like words/characters/screens/etc.
