Missing images
Today I had an issue with an e-library book (EPUB) which I loaded via Adobe Digital Editions. It was the second book of two that I loaded today. The first opened OK but the second said the device was not authorised. Previous library books opened OK and ADE confirmed the device was authorised.
After much head scratching I signed out of Kobo and restarted. I then authorised the device in ADE and downloaded the e-library books again. All now open but the thumbnail images are just black squares. Kepubs are OK and show thumbnail images. Is there anything else I can do regain the thumbnails? Thanks Dave |

The missing thumbnails were not the only issue. When I tried to move back and forward in an EPUB by tapping on the centre and then using the arrows at the bottom - the reader just restarted. This happened every time.
It looks like something became corrupted. So I de-authorised it in ADE and did a complete factory reset, re-authorised and reloaded all books. All is now well (navigation and thumbnails). I would still be interested in views on what went wrong and what I might have done differently. I am a bit concerned that I will run out of authorisations in ADE if I have to repeat this. Dave |

Did you delete the library books before re-authorizing the device? If not then the cover images might have been generated while the device was not authorized, which won't work properly if the book has DRM. A factory reset would delete all the books, but signing out won't, which might explain why the factory reset fixed the problem.
If you reload a book without first deleting the old one, then the database can in some cases (if the file name and size of the new book is the same as the old one) have data from the old book which doesn't match the new book. That can cause all sorts of strange things to happen when navigating the book. Best thing is to always delete the book from the device before loading a new version. You can avoid the need to re-authorize the device after a factory reset or signing out by making a backup of everything in the device's .adobe-digital-editions directory and then restoring it afterwards instead of re-authorising the device from ADE. |

Thanks Geoff.
I had not removed the books at that first step. Great tip on backing up the reader ADE directories - I'll do that now. ![]() Dave |
