Any way to Auto convert when sending via email?
Is there any way in calibre to allow you to auto convert to mobi when you choose to send to kindle email? Id rather not store mobi files alongside my AZW3's so was hoping there might be a way to do this.
Thanks in advance. |

If you set the send-to-email entry to only accept MOBI, it will work just like send-to-device.
calibre will auto-convert if necessary to a format that is acceptable. And just like send-to-device, it will save the result in calibre. calibre will always save the conversion, rather than require you to wait next time you want to send the book. |

Great thanks, I know in some cases like the save to format plug in you can tell it to not keep auto converted files so was hoping for similar.

That can only do it because the plugin author wanted it to. Kovid does not see that as part of calibre's vision, so there is no way within the core calibre code.
But a plugin can run any arbitrary python code, so I guess you could say that the way to do it is to write a plugin that emails a book without saving the converted copy. ![]() If you know how to program in python it shouldn't be too hard. |

Couple of weeks ago I wanted something similar for catalogs - ie an option to not save the generated catalog in the library. Kovid made the code change on the day I posted the request and it was in the next release. ![]() Here's the code changes if you're interested == >> Catalogs: Add an option to not add the generated catalog to the library BR |

This is not a feature I am interested in implementing, sorry. This is not a feature that makes sense to me. Ebook files are small, keeping different formats around is a performance win for no great cost.
@BR: There is a difference between your request and this -- your was to not create a new book entry in the library, this is to not create an additional format on an existing book entry. |

Ahh apologies @kovidgoyal, I created the ticket without reading the rest of the thread so just ignore as I cant see a way to delete it (https://bugs.launchpad.net/calibre/+bug/1486431).
Sorry. Keep up the great work. |

What I did was to create script that I can run from the book folder, it ebook-converts the selected format file (eg EPUB), to another format (eg MOBI) in a selected 'AutoMail' folder. My mail client sends content of 'Automail' folders periodically (in fact twice a day) - bit like calibre's 'AutoAdd' feature. I send things other than ebooks to the same people, eg spreadsheets, diagrams etc, so doing this way is more better for me. Maybe the OP could do something similar. If I were to retain all the MOBI's in the library it would be upwards of 50GB - not that that's much in the 'grand scheme' of things. BR |
