Lightbulb Free (nook/Kindle/iTunes) Wisconsin Supper Clubs [Midwest Culture Documentary Guide]

Wisconsin Supper Clubs: An Old-Fashioned Experience by Ron Faiola (IMDB) is a lavishly photo-illustrated tour of a particular kind of Midwestern restaurant, chock-full of profiles of said venues from all over the titular state, as well as interviews with the proprietors and customers etc., free courtesy of publisher Agate's Midway imprint.

This is a companion book to the eponymous documentary film (IMDB) which appeared on PBS.

NB: in case you were wondering, this does not have any recipes in it besides one for an alcoholic drink called "the Old-Fashioned". Aside from that potential Gentle Reader-disappointing lack, it seems like a perfectly cromulent local travel dining-planning guide since it's organized at the regional level and focuses on the house specialties and such.

Currently free, probably just until the weekend @ B&N (also UK), Amazon (not available to Canadians, but also free in the UK), iTunes (not available to Canadians), may also show up later as a DRM-free PDF direct from the publisher's webcatalogue page (where you can listen to a radio interview with the author) as Agate freebies sometimes do.

This is a 50 meg file, so you might want to avoid downloading it via your 3G device should you have data plan limits. And if you're interested, here's a downloadable interview/featurette about the subject that the author did with Wisconsin Public Radio.

ETA: And this is now retroactively the selected (late) 3rd free (non-repeat) ebook thread of the day.

Because the thing that I was going to pick got posted elsewhere while I was previewing the write-up for it (the monthly University of Chicago Press freebie, which is a really nice LGBT-interest literary memoir by a prominent literary critic and English linguistic scholar who's also a Distinguished Professor of Literature, about his formative experiences influenced by the posthumous revelation of his closeted gay father, BTW, which you should probably all go and get).

But this is also a pretty nifty offering deserving of a feature spot and would have otherwise been my pick out of today's batch if the UCP book had turned up at another time, since I love this kind of local interest documentary profile stuff.

Enjoy!

Description
Wisconsin Supper Clubs profiles 50 supper clubs from all over the state. Author Ron Faiola interviews the proprietors and loyal customers and provides his own reflections on each club's unique qualities and attractions. Full-color photographs highlight the distinctive interiors, classic dishes, and long-standing traditions, bringing the clubs fully to life. Organized by region, this book is an excellent guide to Wisconsin's noteworthy supper clubs.

A meal at a traditional supper club isn't like going out to dinner at your average chain restaurant. The supper club experience honors a time when sitting down to eat was a special occasion that lasted all evening. Supper clubs emphasize conviviality, slow dinning, and food cooked from scratch, all set in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Many supper clubs are family-owned and have been passed down through the generations. Supper clubs are a popular destination for locals, vacationers, and Midwestern foodies "in the know."

Ron Faiola is the award-winning director and producer of the "Wisconsin Supper Clubs" documentary, which first introduced viewers across the country to this long-standing Midwestern tradition. Wisconsin Supper Clubs brings the supper club experience home to you.
