Nothing can beat the appeal to read a book on paper!
Hi BookWorms
![]() I am wondering if in every nation people say this, my Italian friends repeat it always, it is the same for other nations? I am devising some replies to this dogmatic phrase 1) I sincerely agree with you paper is charmer, but of course old handmade incunables where even better than pale books, aren't they? 2) if you read no fiction bring your library with you then 3) ok nice freudian fetish habit 4) no trees has been pulled on the ground with my action 5) you right but can you search how many times is repeated this word? 6) nothing can beat the appeal to not turn pages if you are lazy as me 7) my doctor say that I have to save my wrist 8) my doctor say I have to use bigger fonts and realize that every day there are milion of sales of ebooks. 9)nothing can beat the appeal to hear this question ten times per week 10)...nothing can beat the appeal, but everyone can beat you Last edited by trocchietto; 06-05-2015 at 05:31 PM. |

The same was said of movies vs video when DVDs (or Laserdisc) first came out.

To each their own. Is there really any point in arguing the point when some people prefer paper, others eink, others tablets, others phones, and others (traditional) computers? The poit is that we usually have the choice. The choice should depend upon our tastes or lifestyle or even our mood (nothing says that we have to choose one above the other under all circumstances).

I am sorry I did not want to discriminate nobody, the top ten is just for humor, of course i agree with you, as I am the first fan of paper and love to see my hardcopy books, and I hope they will never disappear, like I empirically guess 95% of the people here. Everybody has its own taste and this is great. I just would like to point out that .. most of the folks in the world for some reasons do not have "ebook" education in my advice, and just out of curiosity I would be really happy to know if in other nations that are not mine, people say this phrase. Also I would like to say that on a certain degree it is clear I am not criticizing nobody, but people that express the phrase above are often too sharp in giving judgements. It is definetly not an urgent discussion, but being the forum about us, addicted eredears, is allowable in my opinion to ask this question. I really hope to not offend nobody, if that was the case I publically apologize, I love paper as I love ereaders, they both serve me for different laudable needs Last edited by trocchietto; 06-05-2015 at 06:38 PM. |

I like the humor.
![]() You're right though, a lot of times this statement is made pretty aggressively. I work in a library, so I hear this pretty often. I usually say what I really feel, which is that the book is the content, not the form - hardcover, paperback, audio, ebook - it's all the same book. Well, the exception is if it's abridged - then it's not quite the same book. Depending on who is saying it at the moment, I sometimes also say that I'm sure that a lot of folks stamped their feet and refused to read anything but scrolls when the present book form came to be. And then I wink. ![]() I just love books, and I'll read them any way I can get them. |

Question is, do these persons actually read. I often hear this from people reading maximum 5 books a year. Second question would be, if they actually have tried ebooks. Otherwise it is just a opinion out of ignorance. And third, about what type of book are we speaking? An expansive well crafted hardcover or a cheap tiny written paperback? Books are not all equally desined and most fiction books I have read weren't something special (and I live in germany, here our paperbacks are in a good quality. Poor americans and brits have some realy ugly books. But of course they are much cheaper than german books.)
By the way, am I the only one, who has problems with old paperbacks and allergic reactions? |

It depends on how aggressive people are when they say it. Normally I just ignore. If I think they're trying to insult me I'd just say something like:
You mustn't be reading very good books if you don't lose yourself in the story. or I know what you mean, I prefer a fine meal on a paper plate with a paper napkin. Don't let the snobs change you. |

forgive me the 14:09 GMT triviality, but most of us are creature of habit - so I know plenty of avid readers who swear by the superiority of paper. Until they try an ereader, in which case most (but not all) are swayed. Especially now that you can read regardless of the environmental conditions (light, water, sand, you name it), how can anyone not be won over by the convenience?
Of course there are still books that make more sense in paper form or on a tablet (art for instance) - but to win someone over I'd recommend lending your own ereader: if you can bear the thought, that is ![]() |

No luck there. I have been able to lend an ereader to my mother but she doesn't want.

Just to clarify, I am not allergic to paper. But to dust etc. that sits in old books. They don't "smell good", they make your eyes tear and your nose snot. These books were of course not well handled and not of good quality, but nonetheless I encountered quite a few of them.
