I'm about to order a Voyage. Question..

Hi,

I know that when the Voyage came out, several people had screen issues that had them returning the readers to Amazon. I really like Amazon(emailing books to the kindle and other reasons)and my PW2 has given me great service. I would like to give my PW2 to my youngest child, so I'm looking at the Voyage. Do you think that screen issues have been addressed in the months since the Voyage was introduced? $200 is not small change for me. I have checked Amazon reviews and see that it seems to have many 5 star ratings. I know that Amazon has great CS and I can return it if I don't like it, but I would just like your opinion on the matter.

Sincerely,

Penny

Back when the PW first came out, lots of people complained about the screen. Then they stopped, and people started being happy. There were always people who swore they didn't know what all the fuss was about.
The general consensus is there were early quality control issues, and later production runs were fine.

I believe I see the exact same pattern with the Voyage.

I haven't looked at them at all recently, but if you're concerned about a specific issue (in this case the screen) make sure you READ the reviews and don't just go by 5 star ratings. In the beginning when there was a lot more chatter about the screens, there were lots of 5 star reviews that complained that the screen had a gradient etc but still gave it 5 stars.

Just get one....you won't know until you have one in hand. As you say, return it if you don't like it. I have a feeling you'll keep it.

My Kindle Voyage arrived on Thursday, and I'm very happy with the screen. To my eyes at least, it looks perfectly even.

Like you, I was mainly worried by all the reviews and by what some people on MR were saying when it was released. I'm glad I finally bit the bullet, though.

How does it look next to the pw2? Curious😁

Also, is the experimental browser working better on the voyage? That's one thing that bothers me on the pw2.(not that I bought it to browse the web) Every once in a while I use the browser to download fan fiction.

Thanks,

Penny

I use the skipstone browser hack instead of the builtin browser. It's faster, supports tabs/bookmarks, runs in landscape mode, I think it uses a later webkit too...

I got my Voyage about 2 weeks ago and the screen seems perfect to me. I've been using a Paperwhite 2 and the first thing I did, and I've done it a couple of times since then, was to put them side by side with the light where I usually like it and compare the screens. All in all, when they're together like that, I think I prefer the Paperwhite screen. The differences are small but they're there when comparing. The Paperwhite screen is warmer in color and it seems a little more opaque. The white background on the Voyage, by comparison, seems just a tiny bit translucent.

However, when I read on them they're the same. I can't really say, after reading a few books on my Voyage, that it's better or worse than the Paperwhite 2's screen. I find I like reading on them equally well.

The size and reduced weight of the Voyage, and especially that screen that's flush with the bezel, are a really nice improvement. It's just a lot more comfortable to hold the Voyage while reading and that's why I'm glad I got it.

Also the fact that the screen is Gorilla Glass means that I don't feel a strong need to keep it in a case for reading it around the house. That makes it even more comfortable to hold. The trade-off is that I'm used to turning my Paperwhite off and on by opening and closing the cover but the power button on back makes things a lot easier and I'm using it without the case more and more.

I tried the page press thing for a while and then turned it off for a while to see if I'd miss it. I didn't. I turned it back on to see if it would become a habit. I've remembered to use it once or twice. I'm used to swiping and I don't see a need for page press. On the other hand I haven't turned pages by accident either. My plan was to turn that back off but I haven't bothered. I just don't use it.

I also tried the brightness sensor for a while but it never quit gave me the right amount of light. It was usually too bright for me. I mostly read in moderately lit to well lit rooms so for me the light is to help improve contrast, not to provide reading light. I finally turned the auto-brightness feature off and put it where I wanted it and I've been happy with it like that.

I think the Voyage is very much worth the price difference; not so much if you just compare specs and features, but because it's much nicer design. I'm keeping my Paperwhite for a backup now but my guess is later this year or next I'll replace it with an even newer second Voyage.

So you prefer the Paperwhite's screen, turned off the Voyage's light sensor and don't use its page buttons. May I ask why you even have a Voyage?

I ordered a Voyage when they first came out. My screen is fine. I saw this same pattern with my DSLR where people were in a panic about "soft" pictures. Then, they weren't. Amazing, isn't it? I'm seeing the same thing with Android 5.0. I installed that property when it was available and haven't had a problem.

I hope you enjoy you Voyage as much as I enjoy mine but then I still enjoy my PW1, too.

I have to admit I much prefer the Voyage's screen to my PW2's. For me, there's no comparison. The resolution is so much better that I can actually use Baskerville on the Voyage to read with, and the experience is enjoyable. On the PW2, it was a disaster IMO -- fuzzy, washed out and uneven. All the fonts are crisper and much more readable on the Voyage, I find.

Haven't tried out the browser yet, sorry!

Has Amazon officially declared that the top layer is Gorilla Glass? Either way, there's still the same very thin and fragile e-ink glass substrate as in every other similar device, isn't there?

i had the same worries about uneven light but after much googling I concluded it was safe to go ahead,
the device has arrived & it seems fine.

the experimental browser is crap but that is to be expected. B&W, small screen e-ink is just a losing proposition for web browsing.

i set the page turns buttons to minimum pressure but am finding it easier to tap the screen. it's pity that screen tab zones are not configurable, but as they say, the next page zone is big enough to tap easily with ether hand.

screen quality and font clarity is noticeably better than on my Kobo Aura HD

it did not arrive pre-registered to my account as advertised but that is no big deal. it has always puzzled me how they can pre-register a device in a sealed container anyway ???

My two cents:

I do not think that a dad like me should be using top of the line anything. That's just what we dads do we sacrifice for our families, none of the automation that I have around my house it top of the line anything. My smartphone is issued to me by my employer, who pays for all of it. My PCs are hardly top of the line, they weren't top of the line when I got them a year ago. My son's iPad is several years old and could hardly be considered to be top of the line. We have a Kindle Fire which is several years old, its first generation. When it kicks the bucket we will replace it with a Asus Transformer as the kindles are all proprietary (dam, I like amazon and why did they have to go be propreitary).

Dad sacrifices for his family, that's why I have chosen to go with the paperwhite for my ereader. It's not top of the line but does the job that I need it to. If and when I upgrade again I intend to stick with the middle of the pack. If I did buy a voyage it would be for my son.

Just because I don't buy top of the line does not mean I walk around in a burlap sack. On my feet are Alan Emonds shoes, they are near top of the line. I wear a Jos A. Banks suit to work, they are not top of the line for Washington, DC, that honor goes to Brooks Brothers. My sneakers are New Balance, not top of the line even for new balance. My new dress shirts are all custom made, cheap custom made ones though.

disagree, spending an extra £50 to preserve/get the most out my eyes is a bargain, when we could blow that much on a single takeout family meal.

So if you read several hours a day, like me, get the best screen on the market.

after all, it's cheap to upgrade your screen, you can't upgrade your eyes.

For me being able to " see " my familiy for as long as possible is more important than being able to "see" an extra £50 in the bank account.

Pass on the next 10 big mac & supersized coke opportunities instead, if you need to get sacrificial

Sure, it's possible that screen quality is a non issue, but i'ts too soon to have data on the effects of staring at blurry e-ink fonts for 5 hours a day for 10+ years
