Problems with RFT files

Hello,

I'm having problems reading files in RTF format: the files are opened correctly (albeit a lot more slowly that EPUB) but sometimes happens that they are truncated that is I cannot read the book until the end

I've tried to convert these file in EPUB with Calibre but strangely the problem remains the same

File that are natively EPUB are instead read without problems.
I've firmware release 3.12.1 that I suppose is the last firmware...

Do you have this problem too? The alternative readers as CoolReader are no good for normal use IMHO because they do not give battery empty indication and worst after recharge they lose all their settings (at least these was the behavior on the old Kobo Aura HD that I destroyed after this happened again )

Care to share one of the RTFs with us?

Any patches or mods installed on your device?

What version of f/w?

prs-300, isn't that a Sony reader? I take it that you also have an H2O?

The alternate reader Koreader has a battery indication available in both a drop down menu and a progress bar display option. I have never lost settings after a "recharge", with my AuraHD.

Luck;

I have never used RTF files, but the only times I have seen an epub with the end of the chapter missing was when there was a malformed extended character in the html, like   without a semicolon. Everything after the &nbsp was ignored by the epub reader.

A missing closing bracket } in the stylesheet can cause a similar problem, everything following the fault is ignored.

Sadly the PRS-300 is dead from years (broken display) it was the better e-reader I ever had not thank to Sony but thanks to the alternative firmware "EbookApplications"!

The battery issue was that maybe the icon was present (I don't remember) but at least in the Kobo HD I have no alert and so if you not noticed it the battery become empty and you discovered it only when you tried to put your device... and when you recharged the device the Koreader settings were gone! The last page was not remember (it restated from page 1), the font size was wrong... all lost...

The battery problem was with Android too and it is for this that after Kobo Aura HD died (I don't say how it died I'm to shy to say it ) I'm using only the stock reader in the H20...

The RFT is really a simple format a sort of glorified TXT file with some mark up for write text in bold, in italic and so on... some version support embedded images too (I don't know if Kobo show images on RTF the old Sony with default reader cannot for example but the one in EbookApplications supported this), I cannot imagine what could make them invalid obviously WordPad and Openoffice open the files correctly and I could read until the end!

Tonight post one of the RTF files that are truncated on the Kobo.

Thank you for your help.

Attached an RTF file that is truncated note that it is not the final chapter probably only a third of the book is shown by the reader! A sentence is truncated: "divenute bianche per la pressione eserc" on Windows with Openoffice and Wordpad there is no problem and all the book is shown until the word "FINE" as expected

Thanks for your help.

One thing to remember; while Kobo MIGHT list RTF as a valid format, I really doubt much testing / use actually happens with it, especially with larger files.

Converted to ePub by calibre I have no issues at all; it opens quickly and displayed the entire document.

Looks ok in Koreader, the Table of Contents shows FINE at page 604.

The TOC and imbedded images look and work fine. I don't read Italian, but things look correct and all there.

So PeterT, as RTF is not read in our device / devices but as EPUB yes? But you have a Aura H20, too? Indeed converting the file to EPUB with Calibre I've the same problem the reader inside Calibre shows all the file but the reader not!

Well Ken Maltby it seems that if I want to know how "The Canticle for Leibowitz" ends I need to re-install Koreader, I hope to not have the issue of setting lost after battery empty again

I converted it to epub with Calibre and sent it to my Glo (firmware 3.13.1), and it works OK with the Kobo epub reader, I can read to the last page, no missing text that I can see.

No I have a Glo running f/w 3.13.1 but all Kobo eReaders nasically "share" the same f/w.

An RTF will be processed by the Kobo engine, but not as an ePub. It actually IS being read as an RTF. But we have NO idea how much effort / testing has happened with that.

When I converted the RTF to ePub via calibre it was using the latest calibre build (2.20) and also I had removed the RTF from the Kobo and allowed it to process that deletion before sending the ePub version.

You could finish reading it using calibre's book reader, it looked ok there as well. Funny thing though the TOC wasn't there, There was one in KOreader and the chapter links worked fine.
