Grrr... Moving Apple iBooks to Kindle

Foolish foolish me. I am a long time Kindle user and decided to finally use $60 of credit on my iTunes account by purchasing some iBooks on the assumption that I could -- as I have done in the past -- remove the DRM and send to my Kindle (note: I PURCHASED the books and therefore should have the right to read them on whatever platform I choose). Unfortunately, all the applications that I have previously used to remove the DRM now no longer work with iBooks, no doubt because of friendly Apple's legal intimidation.

Other than never buying another overpriced super-fragile Apple product again, does anyone know how I can get to read my purchased books on my kindle or android smartphons (other than on my Mac, and I aint going to do that)?

Detailed help with DRM removal can't be given here.

I know of no solution for the current version of iTunes.

There was a tool called Requiem, but the latest version for iBooks only worked with iTunes version 10.5.x.

My daughter gave me an iTunes gift card a couple Christmases ago. I looked into using it -- didn't like the terms -- and just sold it on eBay.

I had a quick look at this recently when I noticed some ITunes gift cards on sale at a 20% discount. I have never bought an IBook but thought it may be a useful way to get a 20% discount on some titles. However, I thought I would first check to make sure I would be able to use it on my reader. I discovered that, as pdurrant pointed out above:
"There was a tool called Requiem, but the latest version for iBooks only worked with iTunes version 10.5.x."
About 20 minutes of searching failed to find even a single copy of this old tool available for download. I simply did not care enough to waste any more time on it. Even if it was available, and I installed an old version of ITunes, I don't like the chances of it removing DRM from current IBooks. I did not therefore buy an ITunes card and have no intention of buying any IBooks.

On other threads people say to use Calibre and google Apprentice Alf. I haven't done this so I don't know precisely what it means, but perhaps check it out.

P.S. I don't think Apple is morally any more deficient than Amazon and I have both their products.

Doesn't work for Apple and the program that is used to remove the DRM from iBooks needs some old version of iTunes that you probably do not have.

In this case anyhow, that's not he point. The point here is that an iBook apparently can't be read (or converted to be read) on a standard E-Ink reader. At the very least it can't be un-DRM'd.

The DRM might be able to be stripped. But you need the correct version of the software to do it and some old version of iTunes. It's just easier not to buy any eBooks from Apple.

The lesson is to do your research before buying. If DRM removal is important to you (and for the typical reader it's not), buy formats from which it can easily be removed.

I understand that. In this thread, however, the OP wants (wanted) to convert iBooks for his Kindle.

Apple doesn't sell eBooks for other, standard E-ink reader.

They sell books to be read on iBooks.

The fact that some hacker managed to strip the DRM at some point is not relevant to the product they sell.

I guess the whole point of this thread is elusive for some folks. Yes Apple, in their infinite control freakness, wants to force you to use only their Apple devices or applications to read their iBooks. Consider that acknowledged.

However, in the context of this thread ... which started in the following way ...

Quote:
Foolish foolish me. I am a long time Kindle user and decided to finally use $60 of credit on my iTunes account by purchasing some iBooks on the assumption that I could -- as I have done in the past -- remove the DRM and send to my Kindle ...
... it appears that that the original poster wanted (even expected) to read his iBooks on a Kindle. Which is all that I'm saying here. If you want to read your books on a Kindle (or any E-Ink device) don't buy it from Apple.

So, in this case, the fact that iBooks can not have their DRM stripped is RELEVANT to the thread -- what is NOT relevant is restating the obvious that Apple does not want DRM stripped from their iBooks.

Is there any other way I can make my point any clearer?

I would not pay for any eBooks from Apple. It's Apple's fault eBook prices have gone up. I hope Apple's eBook sales tank so far they they give up and stop selling eBooks.

If Apple went away tomorrow it wouldn't bother me. I didn't use to be that way. But when they patented a "rectangle with rounded corners," and tried to enforce that patent in a civil lawsuit, that was pretty much the end of any chance I would ever buy anything from Apple.

I'm not complaining about Apple hardware and such. Just their eBookstore and that really awful iBooks.
