Crime novelist P.D. James dies aged 94

The British crime novelist P.D. James has died aged 94. One of the true "greats" of the 20th century crime genre and, unlike some, a writer who maintained her high standard to the end.

A sad loss. One of my favourite authors.

I rather liked the TV adaptation of her Cordelia Gray series starring Helen Baxendale (always kept meaning to read the books but never quite got around to it).

It's sad that she died, but she seems to have lived a good long life and accomplished much within it.

Oh, indeed, it's obviously not surprising that a 94-year-old woman should die, but she was perhaps the last surviving author from what's often called the "golden age" of British detective fiction, and hence, in a way, her death marks the end of an era.

She leaves behind a wonderful literary legacy.

And she gains a form of immortality as her name will be remembered by many, some of whom have yet to be born I'm sure.

IMHO she was one of the finest mystery writers of this century - who could produce complete novels (with depth of character, character development, realistic situations, etc.) - rather than 'who-done-its'. She could also write about unspeakable brutal acts - setting up a brilliant contrast with her refined, sensitive detective, Adam Dalgleish.

I had begun re-reading the Dalgleish series this month - and shall sorely mourn the absence of any new installments.
