Best that ATDrake have a sticky to post their threads in Deals forum?
As ATDrake posts very very many individual threads in the Deals, Freebies, and Resources forum, I suggest that it makes sense that they have one sticky and that all their offerings go into that sticky.
The rationale is that people will know where to find all the deals/freebies that ATDrake posts and it keeps them together. It also means that one can more readily locate single threads from other members. Please contribute your thoughts on this ...... ![]() Last edited by Lynx-lynx; 10-25-2014 at 06:09 PM. |

I think I'd prefer them separate. I check the forum daily and have never had to scroll past the first page to see everything new.

Part of the rationale for posting individual threads is for future proofing with regards to the MR search engine, which defaults to showing thread titles only.
If someone is looking for science e-books (many of which are offered free as Resources on a permanent basis from various institutions), it's considerably easier for them to skim past search results that say (spoilered for length, this is the actual search results from page 10 of running the default for the keywords "free science"): Spoiler:
The equivalent page 10 search set to Posts looks like this: Spoiler:
and IMHO, it's noticeably harder to spot relevant results. One of the other parts of the rationale is to make it more convenient to spot and skim past offers that are Not Relevant To Your Interests®, and it's considerably easier to do that with only a 2-3 line thread title heading to scroll past (depending on how small your browser window is set and whether you're using the Liquid layout) than an entire post within a thread, which the above search result comparisons also demonstrate. (Also, dedicated threads allow for easier noting that whatever deal it is now available in additional stores/regions and for commentary on it by interested MR readers who may have read it or have related questions without going OT in a megathread. I mean, did you really want to see that multi-post discussion on the merits of AmazonCrossing translated foreign language titles to go on in Mystery/Suspense/Thriller?) This, incidentally, is why I've advocated for years that free ebooks (or ebooks deals in general) should probably be separated off into their own subforum, so it would be easier for people to spot audiobook/device/other deals/bargains/resources etc. while still making it convenient for people to quickly skim over ebook offers they were interested in. However, the posting style within Deals has always been left up to the discretion of the poster, subject to modly considerations, despite previous proposals to regulate the confining of stuff to megathreads, whether they simply be the freebie deals, or the specific Kindle offers (paid or otherwise) which people used to complain about cluttering up the forum, or whatever. And for the record, we get considerably fewer official publisher promotional freebies (which I feel are worth individually spotlighting due to relative rarity value and the fact that they're generally "curated" offerings of the sort equivalent to what you could walk into a present-day bookstore and find on the shelf even if you're not personally interested in buying, moreso than the daily KDP slushpile trawl of everyone who can self-pub their shopping list nowadays) than we used to. It's actually dried down to a trickle from the quantities they offered us as little as two years ago. |

I really appreciate the information that I get in ATDrake's posts.
Instead of having an ATDrake sticky, I would prefer that his--and everyone's--posts go into the appropriate general thread ("Non-fiction," "Christian Interest," "Children/YA," et al). |

And books tend to stay free for a very short period of time. So searching for them is pointless. Quote:
And your posting style makes it hard to discover the threads that are from other users. And pushes monthly threads (Baen monthly bundle coupon thread) back many, many pages, making them hard to find when you want to. In fact, activity in that thread has dropped off significantly since you've started over-posting in the forum, which means that your posting style is interfering with people discovering real discounts that they actually want. Quote:
And you can repost any free offers from the past that come up again. Or post a link to the previous post, and people can look for the comments themselves. Quote:

The problem is that your posting style is completely interfering with the Deals and Resources parts of the forum. And this is not a justification for moving the Freebies into their own thread, many of the posts are deals, and I like to see the deals and freebies together. Quote:
Using requests from three and four years ago to justify current behaviour is just not on. The current users of this forum perceive that there is a current problem. Having look at your linked thread, Arcdata now has a thread that they can post in to their hearts content. I have no problem with you having a thread (even a monthly one, although I don't see the point of monthly threads) to post all of your offers in, which allows us to look at it or ignore it, as we now do with Arcdata's thread. ![]() A lot of folks just subscribe to genre threads and may be missing relevant deals out in the general thread. Also, it appears there a ton of xtian themed books that really should be in the Christian Interest thread. |

But if one is looking for a particular subject matter in an e-book offer, the same stays true for the way the MR search engine works. (Incidentally, searching within a thread for results is also moderately unhelpful sometimes, as the results shown just excerpt the top part of the post, so if the XYZ topic you were interested in got mentioned in the middle, you'd likely have to go to the actual post to see if it were relevant if the first sentence or so wasn't indicative.) And for broad-based megathreads such as non-fiction, one may have no interest in, say, military history books, but might have to scroll past a great deal of postings for them in order to see if a memoir has been posted. Again, thread titles (or even post titles which nobody ever uses, in a megathread set to Hybrid/Threaded view) are much shorter to skip over. Quote:
And often off-topic for any thread besides the Romance megathread, which has + Discussion in its title. Quote:

Anyway, I did go over my reasoning for choosing to continue to post official publisher promotional freebie offers in the way that I feel has worked best for years (and which several other MR members have stated they preferred) the last time the OP asked, and I did voluntarily modify my posting style to better accomodate the preferences of those who were complaining about individual threads and couldn't block seeing them via the Ignore User function. Although to be fair, that was a couple of months ago and perhaps it's slipped their mind. |

Going back to when ATDrake started the mega threading, on 15 Aug 2014, they have a vast majority of the threads in the Deals, Freebies and Resources forum.
And that's going back 16 pages. This activity is completely obscuring any past thread on resources or any other discussion. In fact, this activity is obscuring any threads from anyone other than ATDrake. This is a level of completely dominating a forum that I can't ever remember seeing. Even the ability to filter out all threads started by a particular person wouldn't work, because you'd have to know that such a feature exists, have to know how to use it, you may want to see their threads in another forum, and doesn't help non-members. |

Frankly, I prefer to scroll through individual titles to see what's available, instead of having to follow so many category threads.
And regardless of my personal preference, singling out one person's contributions like this feels a bit like bullying and intimidation. I don't think that's right. |

I'm happy with individual threads. Easy to scan and ignore any that don't interest you.

IMHO, it's still fairly easy to see exactly what was on offer back then, and quickly decide if you'd be interested in opening it up and finding out more (assuming you don't have the hover-over pop-up preview function turned on in User Options so that you don't even have to open up the thread to see the opening lines), but again, YMMV. |

At one time, each book had its own thread, but there was a decision to change to the genre threads. I don't have a preference for either style, but I'd like an attempt at consistency. |

Scrolling through the individual threads isn't a issue for me, but I think putting the books (be they on sale or a freebie) in the genre megathreads is easiest. If a book fits more than one genre, it can go in more than one thread.

I am subscribed to a few stickies, so don't generally see the plethora of threads that are being discussed.
In line with the complaint about the dearth of science books (I've just about given up hope for deals on mathematics subjects), I am kind of tired of seeing a huge pile of history (mostly about World Wars, considreing anniversaries) entries in the non-fic deals sticky... any way we can get a separate History deals thread going? Anyway, back to the subjectt at hand, if Drake had his own thread for stuff, maybe I would subscribe to it... |
