Nexus 6 slated for October Release

Google Hopes Whale of a Phone Will Make Splash in Phablet Market

Quote:
Google this month expects to release its largest smartphone, intensifying competition in the fast-growing market for super-sized mobile devices known as phablets, according to three people familiar with the situation.

The new phone — code-named Shamu after a killer whale — will have a 5.9-inch screen, a high-resolution display and be sold under the Nexus brand, two of the people said. Motorola Mobility, the phone maker that Google is selling to China’s Lenovo Group Ltd., is manufacturing the phone, the people added. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment.

The new phone will be larger than Apple's iPhone 6 Plus, which is 5.5 inches, and the Samsung Galaxy Note, the first truly successful phablet, which is 5.7 inches. Google plans to release a new version of its Android mobile-operating system at the same time. Tech blog The Information reported in July that Motorola was working on a Nexus phablet with Google.

Interesting to see mobile phones having gone from kleenex box sized bag phone, to things like the Razor where they were aiming to be so small you'd be scared to lose it and now bouncing back to a 6" screen. Crazy world

^ And now, FINALLY, with the Samsung Gear S as its first top brand* representative, finally back to watch size, exactly the size I need

* cause no name brands already tried it and were not too successful - hoping Samsung will get it right.

Keep an eye open for Nexus 5 price drops. At the end of last Aug, Google dropped the Nexus 4 prices by $100 (to $199 & $249). That's when I picked up my Nexus 4.

The screen is actually QHD (2560x1440), what you've quoted here probably excludes the system bar (top) and navigation bar (bottom).

Size wise, the renders show it should be similar in size to the Note 3 (5.7") and smaller than the iphone 6+ (5.5").

Thanks for the correction. I know some basics, but much of this stuff is beyond my knowledge level; so I wouldn't know if something was missing or not.

My 4.7" Nexus 4 is already too big for a phone. Beyond that, it's tablet territory. If I want something this large to talk on, I'll get a Fire HD6, slap Skype on it, and call it a phone.

Wonder what carriers going to be useable. Especially if it will work on Verizon. Article also mentions that the main goal is to compete with the iphone 6plus - they are not even trying to compete with Samsung? It is no coincidence that the specs of Nexus 6 are almost identical to the Note 4. Also wonder how fast Samsung will update to the new version of Android on the Note 4.
