XP not happy with Sigil 0.8.0

Installed Sigil 0.8.0 on my Win XP SP3 machine. Install went fine but when I try to launch Sigil it complains that sigil.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I used Sigil-0.8.0-Windows-Setup.exe for the install.

Is this expected behaviour for users of XP ?

According to user_none, Windows XP is not supported.

It was not Happy for the Beta on XP either.
XP is no longer being supported by the packages used to develop both Sigil or Calibre.

Linux? if your box does not support the newer (bloated) Windows

(And, Yes, I think the installer should just reject an install attempt on any too far down rev OS )

I'll be honest... I'm sad to see support for XP and OS X < 10.9 go by the wayside with Sigil and calibre (and other software). I understand why support is being dropped, but it's still a shame that machines with OSes that seemed perfectly capable of running Sigil 0.7.4 (w/QT5) should be denied the opportunity to run 0.8.0. At least calibre has given XP users the option to "run from source" to get around the limitation.

I'd be more than happy to compile an unofficial/unsupported version of v0.8.0 that I believe would work on any XP machines that were able to run 0.7.2/3/4 without issues, but I'm reluctant to make waves or create support/bug-report nightmares.

Thanks all for the info - I did look around to see if there was a warning anywhere but missed it.

I did notice all the QT5 stuff that was installed and expected to have some issues (like with Calibre).

Ah well - back to 0.7.4 which did a perfectly good job.

@DiapDealer be my guest. There were a number of OS X packages floating around that weren't officially supported.

The XP stuff is also my mistake. I was supposed to disallow XP installations in the installer before release but I completely forgot.

But the all the same 'QT5 stuff' that 0.7.4 installed - difference is that 0.8.0 ships QT v5.3.1, whereas 0.7.4 ships QT v.5.1.0.

I must be using a custom build (I sure did not build it).

I think you probably grabbed the build I made for Windows that added KevinH's "Preserve Entities" feature. Should see that in Preferences if so (since it wasn't a part of the stock 0.7.4).

Right you are (I went to my archive of installers and that was the full name)

Indeed, and I think we've been here before - I can't recall where I got mine, from Google I think - how many bits is yours, mine's 32.

You may recall I raised the apparent anomaly that Qt 5.3.1 did not create a problem with Sigil in the calibre/XP discussions, and I postulated that perhaps the problem was not in Qt itself but in the python wrappers.

And for the record Kovid didn't stop supporting XP as a policy decision when he released 2.0. He made that decision after the release because of the excessive number of user reported problems on XP, and not without some reluctance/regret I suspect.

It has nothing to do with the python wrappers. they're not even loaded unless you set a python path and run a plugin. It is due to Qt and the updated build chain.

This is the reason I'm not putting effort into XP and made it a policy decision.

In order to have a chance of running anything that uses Qt5 on XP, you need to have XP with SP3 and you need to have a processor that supports SSE2. If the processor is too old to support SSE2, don't even bother trying the custom build (posted in another thread in the Sigil forum).
