CC alpha release 3.4.4h

CC alpha release 3.4.4h has been published and will be available to people in the alpha test program.

Changes since 3.4.4e (see this thread for details about 3.4.4f/g):

• Single-level hierarchical columns. See the new setting in the grouping section
• Use a "star" character for rating types in the book list instead of a number
• [BUG FIX]Fix crash when deleting a book
• [BUG FIX]Use a different strategy to determine the size of the grouping drawer in hopes of preventing characters going off the end
• [BUG FIX]Changes to scrollers in hopes their display will be more predictable
• [BUG FIX]Use alternate method to detect that the "grouped on" columns haven't changed in settings to avoid spurious database upgrades
• [BUG FIX]Disallow first letter grouping on the never-used "user category" group
• [BUG FIX]Fix the book count in first letter grouping when the same book appears in multiple items with the same first letter

There might be display problems in this release. Several very fundamental things were changed in the graphics area to support the single-level hierarchy word-wrapping, and the mechanism for computing the size of the grouping pane changed. None of this stuff touches the database.

This is a fantastic addition and it seems to be working perfectly for me. One thing. If you have First letter turned off, but hierarchical turned on, it doesn't show the hierarchy. Hierarchy turned on should probably override the first letter setting, or it should at least have a note saying both settings must be turned on.

I love (but am not surprised) that you worked out a way to trim the first level off.

The grouping drawer scroll bar is working much better. The only odd case now is that sometimes it doesn't show the grabable one even where there are enough entries that it should. But it is showing the ungrabable one in the correct spot now, and it is usually showing the grabable one when it should. I am going to play some more and see if I can figure out what the cases are when it doesn't show it.

I just want to repeat. The hierarchical changes are great. Fantastic addition.

I thought about that but decided that the user should have the choice. The only way to show the single level hierarchy is with first letters on. If for some reason you want to turn that off, why not let you? If you don't like the results, turn first letters back on. Doesn't take long.

Did I misunderstand how the hierarchical stuff is supposed to work? I expected that anything in the column I have as hierarchical to also be treated as a tag. Everything in the column is strung together as one entry including non-hierarchical tags.

Edit: the column is defined as column built from other columns, behaves like tags.

What I see in those screen captures is what I expect to see.

The hierarchical feature gives you *one* level of hierarchy in the grouping drawer. In your screen captures, that one level is "Genre unread". All sub genres are shown as individual line items no matter how many dots are in them, except that they have the first level (again, in your case "Genre unread") removed from the string.

There is no way that I can with reasonable effort (or even unreasonable effort) show selectable hierarchies for 2nd level on.

The change has no effect at all on what is shown in book details.

I do not want two level, just one. Even after turning off hierarchical, my screen still strings everything together including the non hierarchical tags. The first one has Genre read.Fantasy, read.-bought, read and they should be separate groupings. One for Genre read.Fantasy, one for read.-bought, and one for read . I'll post what they look like when I restore my previous version.

That looks like the column you are using for genre is not marked as "like tags". Could you post a screen capture of the calibre column definition so I can check that I didn't miss something?

I was just thinking you might get support questions when people turned on hierarchical tags and nothing happens.

The column I am using is grouping, not Genre. When you see Genre, that's part of the text that I insert using a template.

Not now. I just restored the g version updated the metadata and updated to h.

I just noticed there are a few that are still strung together even without choosing the column for hierarchy so I'm back on g again.

There seems to be some issue with the new release regarding metadata updating. I am using Calibre 2.4.0.

I have updated the metadata for about 2500 books. When I connected, it sent the metadata for those books. I then switched to a different library, and when I switched back, it sent it all again.

Then I changed 18 books and it did the "anaylzing book on the device" thing for another 5 minutes or so. Now it's sending a bunch of books again and is is not showing the new tags from the other libraries

At this point, I sent you a log.

I just sent you the log, and its now doing the "Analyzing books on the device" again.

Edit 2: It looks like it is doing the "Analyzing books on the device" every time I send books or metadata to the device.
