Booklist : missing character in titles (greek and chinese) and footnotes

Hi,

I confirm that going to firmware 3.8 didn't change the titles display.

Here are two missing subsets:

Attached a test file...

I can't find it...

Is there a default font to update for that ?

I am sure I have read something about someone making a modification to be upgraded..

tshering Modifications for bad eyes changes the UI to make fonts bigger. I'm not sure if it also changes the font in use. But, it might give hints on how to change the font. Or some of the other patches might do it.

Hi David,

I first tried the font trick from this post without success...

I guess I need to go on with tshering's hack

I let you know the outcome ...

Regards for pointing me in that direction

I ended up editing your sample since it appeared to have "test" instead of "text" in the link to the footnote.

Switching to Code2000 as the font gave me the following results:

epub: Page 1 and 2 displayed correctly

.kepub.epub Page 1 and 2/footnote displayed correctly, popup preview did not. Title displayed correctly.

library view: characters missing

See attached screenshots.

It seems that Kobo is using a default font for the library and popups. It might be possible to modify that font choice similar to the work done by GeoffR on the header/footer default test settings or tshering's font size increase patches. I tried using tshering's version for 3.8.0 for the library title and author and changing the Avenir/Georgia fonts to code2k (had to rename the font internally to keep the length down). No joy in trying that -- perhaps user added fonts are not supported in that area.

Regards,
David

I never tried to change the font of the library, but I think it might be similar to the dictionary screen. One has to open a book and select the font via the font menu in order to make it available to the system. But if the sequence of your images is as they are listed here, it seems you had already opened the book and selected the font at the time you took the screen shot of the library.

Hi all,

@DNSB: I spent a the day going forth and back wondering why the popup note didn't work !! Just getting blind. I updated the test file... but my latest version has a bit of chinese (traditional and simplified to check in the footnotes... if I finally was awake correcting the links!)

Thank you very much for your thumbnails... "glad" to see that the problem in the library view is not limited to my device.

But I am almost sure the chinese text displayed right before 3.5... but of course, I might have changed some of my fonts... I remember removing Arial and some open font at some time... If one of them had the same name as the internal (smaller) one, maybe it explains why the error was not seen.

I used fontforge for my ruby pinyin font... I remember changing the name in the properties, but actually there were quite a few names, and I am not sure I did so well (only managed to change the human readable name).

Some most testing with the renaming of fonts, I let you know if I find the correct adjustment.

Regards

It seems to work that way with errors, it's so much easier to spot someone else's mistakes.

Good luck with finding a workaround!

The problem seems to be that the device automatically selects the fonts for the library view. If there are several fonts that provide a certain character range, the device selects one of them. But unfortunately the selected font may not support each and every character of the range. Compare the two screen shots. The first image shows the library view after powering the device on. The characters of the first two titles are outside of the range supported by any of the three system fonts. The fifth title contains characters that are in the range of Gothic MB101 (one of the three system fonts), but one character is not really supported.
The second picture shows the library view, after I have opened the first two books and selected the appropriate fonts. Since they are now available to the system they are used in the library view.

The work around, I guess, consists of two points. 1) Remove all fonts that support the range you are interested in apart from the one you want to use. 2) make this font available to the system by opening a book that uses it. However, this does not seem very convenient.

@tshering... wouahh this is incredible I didn't understand your "opening a book" statement in your first post... but it surely has an effect !

Can't wait to try that...

Thanks again for taking time of describing and for sending the screenshot.

Hi

@tshering:

Sorry, did everything I could, without making it work...

I took all the fonts away from the "user" font folder. Reboot.
Put only the font for simplified chinese (code2K first, then redone the same process with another asian ttf)
Opened a book.
Changed to the user font.
Tried to view the notes.
Library view = No, still with squares
Reboot
Library view = No, still with squares

;(

I guess the internal font "thinks" it works with the square (as opposed to the fonts displaying double crossed square). Therefore it refuses to be superceeded by a user font in the library view, and in the popupnotes...

Regards

I did a little test.
  • First I deleted Gothic and Ryumin. I hoped that the only Chinese font on my device NotoSansHans-Regular.otf will be picked up for the library view, but this did not happen (even after opening a book).
  • Next I deleted all fonts from the system partition. As expected the result was that the whole user interface showed only squares. After opening a book and selecting NotoSansHans-Regular.otf, the user interface showed again characters, but not characters of NotoSansHans-Regular.otf, but of FairyDustB.ttf (a font with very limited range that I installed for test purposes at some point). Tibetan and Sanskrit are displayed as squares.
  • Next I deleted all user fonts apart from NotoSansHans-Regular.otf. After opening a book and selecting the font, the user interface used NotoSansHans-Regular.otf. Chinese titles in the library view are displayed correctly.
  • Next I added my Tibetan and Sanskrit font (both font names start with letters higher than "N"). After opening a book, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Chinese book titles are displayed correctly in the library view.
Strange side effect: If I select "Library" from the Home screen, I get a full screen menu showing Books, Previews, My Collections, Articles from Pocket. The other menus behave as usual.

Edit: I installed Gandhari Unicode.ttf. Chinese titles are not displayed at all in the library, but the Greek letters are now ok. Tibetan and Sanskrit is still displayed correctly. The "Library" menu works again as usual.
It looks like some fonts claim to cover more characters as they actually do, and by doing so they prevent the software from searching for alternative fonts.

Hi tshering,

I must miss something from the really beginning... I erased the fonts from th fonts folder I created to put extra fonts.

From what I understand when you write about erasing gothic and ryumin, is that you go directly in the "system". You mean through telnet don't you ?

Thank you again for your detailed explanation, I am sure I am going to make it work in the end

Sincerely

Telnet is certainly the most convenient way to do it. I did it via the terminal of Kobo Start Menu, since I had no pc with telnet at hand. Another way would be to overwrite the font files with empty files via the update mechanism (KoboRoot.tgz). But to my taste this is somehow a dirty solution.
