M92 - please tell me this isn't happening

Hi, Folks

Yes, it's me again.

I switched on my long-troubled M92 this morning, and instantly saw that something was wrong with the screen/display. As it powered up it looked as though there was a smaller screen, about 2/3 the length of the full screen, 'embedded' within the larger display. Once it had powered on there was a bold white line across the display at that 2/3 length position + some garbled stuff in the upper right part of the screen.

I'm attaching what is probably a pretty bad photo. It faintly shows here -- there are also "ghost" icons in the display (at least that's what it looks like).

At one point I powered off again, and the garbled junk remained, in black, in the upper right portion of the screen.

I tried resetting to factory defaults, with no effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This unit will not be going back to Germany again. If the screen is just broken ... that's really the end.

Glenn

Fractured screen substrate - a classic image, I'm afraid. Sorry, but I'm afraid it's broken.

How incredibly odd. It hasn't been anywhere but on the bed, in its case, for a few days.

I guess the M92 didn't want to share, and needed its own bed.

Sorry to read this. It's been discussed in several threads that the m92 screen seems to be quite fragile.
It's a pity that a device that's quite expensive is not more resistant. Anyway, I've only had this reader and I don't know if this is a problem with the e-ink screens or it's worse on this particular device

I thought a broken substrate typically shows diagnol lines.

Depends on the orientation of the fracture. This one is horizontal.

A little off-topic, but: the Onyx M96 still has Pearl eInk screens with a glass substrate, right? No plastic substrate?

Correct. It's a glass substrate, like pretty much all current devices.

Would I be remiss in saying the M92 screen is fragile? I know this will sound like the usual "but I didn't do anything," but I honestly do not remember any incident whatsoever with my unit that would have subjected it to mechanical stress, unless the cat somehow learned to wield a mallet.

The last time I got it back from Booxtor the box had been mangled pretty noticeably -- I'm guessing by the USPS. Perhaps some sort of initial damage was done then, and it finally gave completely?

I don't recall seeing M96 posts re: broken screens ... is it more hardy (then again, it hasn't been out very long)?

I don't think the screen of the M92 is inherently any more fragile than the other non-frontlighted Pearl 9.7" readers; they all use the same E-Ink screen assemby. The M96 might be different (as it has a frontlight), I don't know.

The M96 does NOT have a frontlight.

You're right of course; no idea how I could be that confused... Well, that adds the M96 to the lineup 'uses the same screen assembly' of all 9.7" readers from the Kindle DXG onwards.

Given, though, that substrate fractures are generally caused by flexing of the screen, a lot does depend on how rigid the device is - a more rigid casing should mean a lower risk of screen fractures.
