Is my display normal?

This is my first e-ink device and it seems duller than I expected. Its a new version 2 iLiad. On a sunny day the display is fine but on a cloudy day it seems quite dull and not so easy to read. And I need really good light at night. The display seems to be black on grey rather than black on white. Is this normal or did I get a defective display? Thanks.

Sounds pretty normal. The iLiad has a "1st generation" eInk screen which does has significantly poorer contrast than the "VizPlex" screens used by most other eInk readers.

You can easily compare it to a written piece of paper. If you can read the paper you can read an Iliad as well.

I need much better light to read my iLIad than what I need to read a book.... so does that mean my display is defective?

No, it does not mean it's defective. You do need pretty good light to read a 1st gen eInk screen. Post a photograph of it if you're worried, but it all sounds perfectly normal.

I had a chance to see another iLiad display and my screen appears normal. I also just got a Bookeen Cybook Gen3 so had a chance to compare the displays. The Cybook display is easier to read in dim light since the contrast is better (background is more white). Not sure which reader I prefer yet... so many trade offs... but both do the required DRM mobipocket so I can read ebooks from online libraries.
