What do the heads signify in the Author tag

With the tags browser on the left of the screen there are icons next to each author of a head and shoulders outline.

In some cases this is all grey: in others it is varying amounts of a black infill.

What does this mean?

It does not seem to relate to the number of books?

The average rating of the books by that author.
