New sticky suggestion
I would like to suggest a new sticky thread.
There is a discussion of changes to ebooks: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=236430&page=8, particularly with post 114 that is related to MR. Let me start by saying I have no problem letting people contribute whatever they want; I just want to know if there have been "changes" made to "classics". For example, changing "gay" to "light-hearted" would need a strong comment that the text has been modified; Whereas cleaning up a line-break error is fine. What do people think about a sticky thread specifying such contributors/contributions? Something like: The first post would list contributors who contribute "original" ebooks. The second post would list contributors who contribute "modernizations". For example the first post's list would start with HarryT. The second post's list would contain AlexBell. There would be no stigma attached to being on either list. ![]() |

I would have no objection at all to such a sticky. But can't I be on both? There are some ebooks I've done where I've only corrected typos (or at least, the ones I see) and haven't changed any words. It depends on the ebook.

If I am understanding your suggestion correctly, you want the books submitted to Mobileread to be annotated.
If that is what you want, the post for each book should have the changes listed, not a GENERAL DISCUSSION thread. AJ |

Using AlexBell as an example (again, sorry for singling him out). In one of his contributions, he says: Quote:
In a conversation in a separate thread, he posts that he made additional changes ("gay" --> "light hearted"). There is no mention of this in the contribution thread. I have an aversion to posting something that may be considered negative in a contributors thread. So I think a central thread with a quick reference of which contributors are/aren't doing modernizations would be helpful as a quick reference. Someplace where I can go to do a quick check, and than do a more detailed search if I have any doubts. I would hope that contributors could post to this main thread saying that they are/aren't doing modernizations. Or maybe I'm over thinking this. ![]() |

The place for such comments is with the book. Others won't care and we don't need to start flame wars over whether the works contributors is true to the original because it changes a comma.

Moved out of the General Discussion forum and to the Feedback forum - where such threads as this belong.

I do. And I like your idea of a sticky thread; perhaps not one neatly dividing the uploaders into two groups, but one in which uploaders explain their editing policies.
I for one change almost nothing: most certainly no words, and I don't modernize any spellings. Usually I will even leave a typo alone, unless I am both more than certain that it is one and think that it will confuse readers if not corrected. This doesn't happen very often. |

I do not think we should isolate a list of contributors in a thread. I do think that substantial modifications (anything beyond fixing typos and punctuation) should be mentioned in the thread where the eBook is submitted. If a author's work is modified, out of respect to the author, this should be stated explicitly what sort of changes were made. It may be, in the future eBook database, that this sort of thing would be part of the metadata on the book.
