Hi, I need Calibre to catalogue my files, but I don't want to have them copied (they are far too many) or moved immediately. Is there a way to do it like in music libraries? Thanks!

No, Unfortunately not. The process of adding books to Calibre always takes a copy.
It might be possible to use the Import List plugin to populate a calibre database - but that requires you to get the list of books into a format that is usable by that Plugin. |

If the problem is "There are far too many" and you are afraid of it taking too much time, I suggest just leaving it to work overnight, or doing it in chunks. If you don't want the duplicates consuming space on your hard drive, there is no fix.
They will never be moved, unless you have calibre auto-adding from a watched folder. |

Won't do. Thanks anyway.
The problem is space, not time. By the way, there isn't any other software which manages only metadata? I guess not, wishful thinking |

calibre is quite powerful and can give you a lot of fine-grained control over how your books are saved to device storage, and I really do think it is worth it. For perspective: (Changing the Calibre File Structure) Quote:

I can see that, I'd be perfectly happy with calibre handling it, but basically I got it to sort out the mess with wrong/inverted/no metadata tags in the first place. It'll just stay a mess and that's it.
