settings for viewer?
I believe something is wrong with my viewer.
I converted epub to mobi. Epub cover is ok in Calibre viewer, but mobi cover is bigger and distorts when I resize the window. I want it to retain it's aspect ratio. Now I don't know if this has always been so - it is the first time I've looked at mobi file with Calibre viewer. (I have 'maintain aspect ratio' checked in output settings) Secondly, I modified an epub (in Sigil), and can vouch that cover aspect ratio is xMid... etc . In Calibre viewer, cover is distorted (actually, all big pictures are distorted). About that I'm pretty sure - in my home computer cover aspect does not follow the window. There must be some setting or tweak... ![]() trav |

The Calibre viewer is really an epub viewer, and any other format is silently converted to epub format before being displayed. Therefore you should not rely on the Calibre viewer to accurately show how any other format would be shown on a device that handles it natively. For mobi format you should use either the Kindle app or the Kindle Previewer to get a better feel for how it will be handled

I know that all other formats are converted 'on the fly' .
I believe that when the epub problem is solved, mobi will behave too. |

Covers for all non epub formats are always stretched to fit the window, this has always been the case.
For epub, depending on how the cover is coded in the epub, you may or may not get the cover stretching. Dont use sigil, do an epub to epub conversion in calibre setting preserve cover aspect ratio under epub output and you will see that the cover's aspect ratio is preserved when opening it in the viewer. |

I did epub > epub, but cover + other pictures are still stretched (and yes, aspect ratio is ticked). I'm 99% sure that on my home PC (Win XP), I opened a epub in Calibre viewer, saw the distorted cover, opened with Sigil and pasted 'xMidYMid' instead of 'none'. After that cover did not stretch in Calibre viewer.
Also, everything I put in in Sigil was pretty much the same in Calibre viewer. I do not see any place in settings that deals with cover (or other big pictures). I'm setting up Calibre on the laptop and have no access to my home PC, and those stretched pictures really irritate me. |

I found at least one culprit: xMidYMid_meet. So the covers are now ok (at least in epub).
But I know that I have added big maps into epubs and they did not stretch with the window. |

Your big pictures likely have some css causing them to stretch like width:100% or something like that. Impossible to say without access to the file.

Code:
<h2 id="filepos847684"><img alt="bk2BIG" src="../Images/bk2BIG.jpg" /><br /></h2> This one is centered, but stretched: Code:
<h2 id="filepos1724997"><img alt="bk3BIG" src="../Images/bk3BIG.jpg" width="100%" /><br /></h2> Code:
h2 { font-size: 1.25em; line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 1em; text-align:center; text-indent: 0; } |
