Calibre on an Android Tablet
Hiyas all,
I've been using Calibra 64-bit on my Windows 7 PC for quite a while now and love it. I've just bought my wife a Tablet with Jellybean 4.2 (although it is still in transit) and would like to know how to install Calibra onto it. I've been to the Calibra site and it didn't seem at all clear to me how to do it... Cheers, Chadwick |

Not possible, sorry.
You use calibre to prepare and convert and then send books to the device. And then a reading app on the device to read the books. You can access a computer running calibre from the device, using a remote desktop program or the calibre server via a webbrowser or a reading app with opds support, for instance Mantano Reader. I send my books from my computer to a shared folder on a NAS. And copy the books from there over wifi using my Xoom tablet and the app FolderSync. |

Okies, I hear what y'all are saying but apparently the Tablet I bought also comes with Windows 8. All I can do at this point is link the Site and hope for the best:... http://dx.com/p/freelander-px2-mtk83...1gb-ram-234892
So, what do you think...? Cheers, Chadwick PS: This Tablet/Phone seems like mind-blowing value-for-money, am I right or am I right? Last edited by Chadwick; 11-20-2013 at 05:55 AM. |

They are crafty, but I think it spells out in more than one spot that the Operating System is Android 4.2. With the graphics on the page you could easily be confused, but it says "Switch UI style at will" not actually switch between Operating Systems. Still for the price it seems like a decent Android Jellybean phablet. |

As far as I can see that tablet is based on an ARM family processor. In which case if it can run Windows 8 it will be the version that runs on the Microsoft Surface RT. Despite its name it cannot run standard Windows programmes that you would run on a Desktop PC - it needs special versions of software built for that version of Windows.

Thanks for all of the responses. It's clear to me now that our new phablet won't support Calibra...but that's okay.
![]() The reason that I like Calibra is that it's free but more importantly because you can highlight a word or string of words, right-click and then bring up a menu that lets you (among other things) Google it or get a Dictionary definition. We use this function all the time when we read. As examples, say I'm reading a Harry Bosch novel (Michael Connelly) and Harry is going to meet someone at such-and-such eatery in Hollywood because they make the best chile dogs or what-ever. I can highlight the name of the eatery, right-click, Google it and more often then not, the 'location' is real so I get to see what it looks like in real life and also check out the menu! Someone's driving a '62 Caddy El Dorado and I don't know what it looks like. No probs, I Google it. When I'm not sure of what a word means, I look it up in the Dictionary - although Calibra uses the 1913 Websters dictionary for some unknown reason. Someone lives on Mulholland Drive, I can check it out with Google Maps. Etc, etc. Anyway, I found some Android apps with the functions we want and it looks at this stage that we'll opt for Moon+ Reader Pro. Thanks again for the quality responses and Good Reading to all this Festive season ![]() Cheers, Chadwick |
