Newbie - where to start
Newbie here. I have a Kindle Paperwhite 3G e-reader. I have rooted Nook devices before, and I would love to do the same with my new Kindle.
From reading around on this forum it seems I first need to jailbreak using this http://tablets.wonderhowto.com/how-t...eader-0139576/ What are your recommendations? Is this the method you recommend to jailbreak? and then what do you recommend I do after that? I look forward to getting your advice. |

Hi ladykayaker !
I would recommend Kindle Touch Hacking wiki page : https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Touch_Hacking It's marvelous resource for beginning your Kindle adventure. ![]() Also, you can hang around at local IRC channel: #kindle-dev. |

If that is what you have, then all is well and good. There is a very simple to use jailbreak in the Paperwhite Jailbreak thread. If your "new" Kindle Paperwhite is a Generation(2) device - Not so good. It can only be jail broken using the serial port. The easiest way to be sure of what you have is to post the first 4 characters (only) of the device's serial number. We can tell you if the news is good or bad from that information. |

Thanks. I know this is a really dumb question, but where do I find which firmware version I have?

You do:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers Now check the firmware version to see if it is one the jailbreak will work on: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=198446 If not one of the supported firmware versions, you will have to "update" to an older version. Link to older versions and directions in the same post. |

Just download the Amazon image file from the link in the first post of the link I gave, use the Kindle's "Update Kindle" feature (It can't tell it is "down-dating"). |

Thanks. got it! I have downgraded to 5.3.1 and already run paperwhite jailbreak. Wow, that was easy. I have rooted the nook e-readers my kid's have and this is a ton easier. Kudos to whoever was the brilliant mind(s) behind all this.

Leave it in "airplane mode" until you install the backdoor lock to prevent Amazon from remotely updating your kindle. Once that is secured - You will be needing USBnetworking - I would suggest that you first install the KUAL launcher as your next step - Then "backdoor lock" (there is a KUAL version of that) - Then the USBnetworking (there are KUAL controls for that) - After that, it will be a simple set of "copy" commands. All of these things I am suggesting you install are being placed into the USB storage area - not into the system that you intend to back up. |

ok great - thanks for that advice. I will hunt around for the KUAL launcher - but if you know where it is that would be a great help.
