500 Locked Up

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before (I took a quick look but didn't see this problem addressed).

I turned on my 500 (it hadn't been used in a while; I mostly use the 505 and my wife rarely uses the 500). Anyway, the starting up screen came up, but didn't go away. After about 10 minutes I noticed that it was still on that screen. I powered off but nothing happened. I tried 3 or 4 times and it finally powered off. I turned it back on and it got stuck on the starting up screen again. This time, I have been unable to turn it off. Also, I've tried hitting the reset button on the back; no luck. It's now been on (stuck on the starting up screen) for about a day and nothing that I've tried has gotten it past that screen, to turn off, or to reset. Do I have to just wait for the battery to die? Then what?

It sounds to me like your problem is that the battery has died, MSWallack -- they'll do that when left alone for a long enough period.

Try plugging it into the wall charger (not USB!) and leaving it at least until the red charging light over the power switch goes out on it's own. If you can let it charge from the wall overnight, that's even better.

If that doesn't clear things up for you, then you've most likely got some sort of hardware failure, but I'd lay odds upwards of 98% that it's just a flat battery.

NatCH, you are a genius. I charged it overnight and everything was once again good and right in the world. Well, that might overstate things a wee bit, but you get the idea. Interesting that the battery had enough juice to keep displaying the start up page for more than a day but not enough juice to do anything else. Thanks again.

That's a characteristic of e-ink. It doesn't require power except when changing the display (if you don't consider "polling" the switches for input).

"Fully charge the Reader with the charger" here seems to be the equivalent of every IT department's universal advice to "Reboot"!

MSWallack ... ther eis a hack for the 500 to allow you to turn it off so it doesn't sit and draw power. Good to use if you don't plan to use it for a few days at least.

Could you tell my wife that? I keep telling her and she just gives me that "I'll let you think that" smirk.

Seriously, though, I'm glad it worked for you, and there's no particular genius in remembering something you read before, so I guess I can't really claim that either.

I'm in a bit of a pickle guys.
you describe this fix as using the "charger" but all I have (thanks Ebay) is the USB cable and the cradle.
No AC adapter to solve the issue as described.
Any suggestions?

A psp charger will work.

Here's a link to some general re-setting and recharging advice.

The 500 will not recharge via USB if you let the battery discharge beyond a certain point - an AC charger is essential.

As Patricia notes, a PSP charger works just fine - it uses the same power socket as the Reader.
