DeDrmed
I know you guys aren't allowed to talk about how to strip a book of it's DRM. That's fine, i already know how. But what i wanted to know was if there was a simple way to tell if a book has DRM or not, just so i can be sure. Thanks for any help, it's much appreciated!

I think there is a python program around this forum that checks for the existence of drm, but you would have to search for it.

Just go to Calibre. If a book has DRM it will show up in a file with some AMZ type name. If it does not have DRM it will show up in a file as Mobi.

Use Mobi Handler
On windows system you can use Alissa's excellent Mobi Handler. When displaying the ebook properties, you will see that drmed books have the "encrypted" box checked.

Think of it this way: the owner of a DRMed book possesses a license to read the book on any Kindle she owns. Depending on the book, she is also entitled to lend (temporarily transfer) the license to read to another Kindle user. While the book is lent out, it cannot be read on the original purchaser's devices. |

This gets confusing, sorry
Question: I have a Sony reader, I am purchasing a Kindle reader. Is there a way to legally get my books that are DRM epubs from Sony to Kindle? |

Morally, I'd say yes, you have the basic right to read an ebook you have purchased on the device of your choice. Laws in the United States these days are written for the benefit of corporations and big government, not for the benefit of individual citizens. There are lots of examples where legality and basic human morality are in conflict. For example, in many states you don't own the rainwater that falls on your own property and you are breaking the law if you save the rain in a barrel and use it to water your tomato plants. |

Nope. Kindle books can only be read on Kindles. You have to remove the DRM and convert from Amazon's format to EPub in order to get the books on a Sony.

But you would have to download Calibre (donations-sponsored software) then search for 'Apprentice Alf's blog' and follow instructions there. Then convert the DRM-free file to MOBI (Kindle's format). It probably takes about one hour of fiddling, less if you are smarter than me. Once you figure it out, it is a really fast process. I recently moved from SONY to Kindle as well. I am really glad I did. |

I tried opening the book in Kindle for PC on a different PC then mines using my brother's account. It opened. Weird thing though, almost all my dedrmed books are in AZW3 format. I thought that meant that they still had DRM?
Edit: By the way, thanks for all the help guys ![]() Last edited by Big McLargeHuge; 10-31-2012 at 04:31 PM. |
