Kindle three technology

What is the technology behind the kindle three like? I believe that the kindle has only memory and I have no idea how much user accessible memory it has when it comes from the factory with no books on it. I believe that it has a flash bios and I have no idea what else it has.

My Kindle Keyboard came with 3.05 Gb. If one hits "Menu," then the available memory shows in the upper left hand corner. Mine now shows 2.917 Gb free.
