Sync Problem
Apologies if this has been asked and answerred; I did search but didn't find anyhing similar.
![]() Sometimes (not always but way too often!) when I sync my reader using the Sony Reader for PC software most of my books are removed from the reader. Just when I get my collections organized I sync to add new books and most of the old books disappear. I've gone through this three times so far and am getting very frustrated. ![]() Has anyone else had this problem and if so, do you have a solution? I am considering ditching the Sony software and using Calibre instead. Any opinions on this as a solution? ![]() |

I don't use or recommend using Reader for PC if you want ANY semblance of control of your books on the device itself. Sync syncs everything. Period. End of story. Once items are synced you can't remove them from the device unless you resync then select selective sync but then it removes all the books from your reader and readds everything that you've chosen to sync.
It's a PITA. I don't use Calibre *yet* to manage my books. I just drag & drop them from my computer to my reader. If you want to stop using Reader for PC to manage your books on your device then make sure you turn off the setting that automatically starts Reader for PC when your device is connected to your computer. Good luck! I love the reader I just really hate the software. I wish it didn't change from the previous version but oh well. Nothing I can do about that. |

The setting is under Preferences. Edit -> Preferences. Make sure you uncheck where it says launch Reader for PC when the device is connected.
I don't think it's fair to rate the reader a 4 out of 5 because of the software. You don't have to use it to use the reader and it does work for some people. I know someone who uses it because she just doesn't have a clue how to use a computer & sync is perfect for her. Well, sort of....I got a paniced phone call last night that it wasn't working!!!!! After much yelling & freaking out at me, I had her computer savvy son confirm that she was using the wrong cable!!! Once she connected it to her computer with the right cable, the world began revolving on it's axis again. LOL sheesh I tried to get her to go Kindle but in Canada we can't borrow library books on the Kindle so she didn't want it. |

Thanks for the reply Shopaholic. I turned off the start automatically setting as you suggested. I guess I'll use the drag and drop method for now while I further investigate my options using Calibre.

Thanks for the tip about turning off the automatic launch of the Reader software. I hadn't taken the time to look around for that setting, but I'm going there now.
@GeckoFriend Definitely check out Calibre. I was a bit intimidated at first even though I am fairly computer literate, but I found it to be straightforward and easy to use to get books from all over onto my T1. Others here can provide guidance about organizing your library in Calibre if you have special preferences in that regard. |

@phloxy I've decided Calibre is the way to go. I've decided to abandon the Sony reader software entirely except for downloading books purchased from Sony. So far the only thing I don't like in Calibre is the way it handles collections; I'll continue reading documentation and try to find a way to organize the way I want.

I think you'll really like Calibre, GeckoFriend! Good luck. You'll get good advice and answers here if you need them!
