Nook Margins Bug?
I've run into a problem with the Nook Simple Touch text-menu settings for margins. If I select the option on the left to have no margins and don't click Publisher Defaults there are still some books (Dresden Files, for example) that have these large page margins.
I've done a little bit of research and I've been able to determine that the offending file is the page-template.xpgt. A lot of people seem to point to the CSS file as causing margin issues, but that definitely doesn't appear to be the case here. The margin settings are something ridiculous like 3em which basically means the larger the text the more obnoxious the margin becomes and I generally have the 2nd largest text option set. It could be that the Nook appropriately overrides CSS margins based on text-menu settings but ignores page-template.xpgt? Is this considered a Nook Simple Touch bug? I'm also curious to know if it is a problem with the Nook color or tablet? |

I doubt it's a bug. But I do think that using page-template is a stupid thing to do. There's no need for it.
I just delete it and all references to it. f course, I do strip the DRM. |

I agree that it seems "stupid" but I'm sure there is someone with publishing experience who can possibly explain the value of it when someone actually sets up the file with px margins instead of em. The problem is the way it is set up oftentimes doesn't work with this particular device with a 7" screen. It probably works fine on a larger laptop or tablet screen. The Nook menu seems to imply that I can set the margins and line spacing the way I want, but ultimately it doesn't allow me override it.
Your suggestion to deDRM it and remove the offending file will work, but not every user is going to be able to do this. Beyond the technical hurdle for some is the legal fears. I don't completely understand the legal side and the concept of fair use completely, but this is a perfect example of another problem with DRM. The publisher sets the margins in a way that are completely unacceptable, the reader software doesn't allow an override, and the person reading it is stuck with a book that requires a page turn every second at a font size that is comfortable to read. |
