PRS-T1 Sorting options

Looking for a little help here. I've had the PRS-T1 for about 6 weeks now, and have been put off by the stock sorting method. I initially moved my ebooks to the device via Calibre. When I set it to sort by Author, all it would sort by was Author's first name. This doesn't seem to be a new problem, a search showed a couple other threads related to it.

My current firmware is the latest - 1.0.03.11140
Calibre version is 0.8.31

Per the instruction on the other thread, I had to do both changes: the toggle in Device Interface Plugins (which by itself did not fix the problem) and then the addition of a line in the Metadata Plugboards. After this last change, the reader now sorts by authors last name.

The only thing now is that I'd like it fine-tuned just a bit. Yes, it does sort by last name, but past that everything is disorganized. For some authors I have well over 30 ebooks listed, and I have to hunt for a title which is not organized in any fashion other than author's name. Is there a fix which will provide a secondary sort, say by ebook Title?

If your books are named in the way: Author - Title, or Author - Series - Title, or something similar, try to order by file name instead of author. That's the only way I know to do it.

OK, on browsing my ebook folder, I see that my files are named in this fashion: title - Firstname Lastname.epub

What do I do with this information? And will your method let me sort by last name first, and then secondarily by title?

Nothing with that, I'm afraid. If your books were in the way {Author_sort} - {Title}, where {Author_sort} = {Last name, first name }, then sort by filename will order first by last name and later by tittle.

I don't have a T-1 but if I were you I would try the following.

This may not be what you want, but for the x50 line of Sony devices I use the blue plugboard below. I would try using the following 2 metadata plugboards and see what happens. In theory it should sort by author first, then series and title. I'm unsure, but you may have to change the box you checked in the Device plugin?

Format: device_db
Device: PRST1
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}
Destination field: authors

Format: epub
Device: PRST1
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}
Destination field: authors

The blue one updates the T-1 database the second updates the metadata in the book for those times when the T-1 chooses to reset the database based on the book info.

If you choose to try this it is best to set metadata management to Automatic management. This can be found at Preferences - Sending books to devices.

Thanks. I edited the plugboard statement to match yours and now it sorts it the way I wanted. Not quite the appearance I expected, I would rather have the author line just show the author, and now it also includes the title. But at least now its organized properly.

I don't think it should show the title in the author line, but it will show the series. Did you accidentally include {title} in your plugboard? If you don't like anything in the author line experiment and remove items. For my 950 I also have the following:

Format: device_db
Device: PRST1
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}
Destination field: authors
Source Template: {author_sort} {series:| - | } {series_index:05.2f}{title}
Destination field: title_sort

I put my first reply in while you were adding your post. So then I went back in and removeod the checked toggle from the device plugin, and added Automatic Management in metadata management.... just to see what would happen. Uploaded one book, and checked. Everything had reverted to its original state. Books sorted by author's first name only. Added the toggle back in the plugin tools, left automatic management on, and now everything looks like my previous state: now all ebooks are sorted by Author (last name) followed by title. The author line contains the authors name plus the title.

I'm going to leave it at this. Too much editing and I may change something I don't want to change.
