sleep and wifi question

Hello, a happy owner of a kindle 4 nt here.

A quick question I haven't been able to get an answer for. Is wifi (and consequently whispernet) supposed to turn off when I put my kindle into sleep mode by pressing the power button?

This is the bevaviour I'm having and when I wake up the kindle I see that it reconnects to the wireless network and only then it starts downloading content I had previously pushed to it.

Mine doesn't do that. I only use the wifi when I'm sending/downloading books to it as I've read it's a battery drainer.

Mind you, I never send it to sleep. I let it do that on its own. It sleeps when it's ready

I'm not sure you can say that. You just simply switch off the wifi before it goes to sleep. This way you cannot verify my point.

Leaving wifi on is an obvious power drainer but I would at least expect to have my kindle synchronized when it is asleep which is not happening. If that is how it is supposed to work (which is the question of this thread) then what you are doing is the most obvious thing to do and I will start doing it too. Leaving the wireless connection on would be completely useless.

update: I've seen from the amazon website that when I push books on my kindle while it is asleep I get a message stating that the book will be available to me the next time I switch on the kindle and activate the wireless connection. So maybe putting it to sleep really inhibits wifi and whistlernet after all but I would like some feedback about this.

Yes, after a short amount of time, it'll turn off, otherwise it would be a common problem for users to wakeup their Kindles and find the battery completely drained.
