book title truncated

there is a limit on how many characters appear in title bar ( I thin that is what it is called) - the line at the top of main window.

so longer titles are chopped.

any reason why - it would be neater to see the entire title
e.g.
The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World
appears as
The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Rem - author - sigil

could be that long author names get chopped also - have not looked into that

note also that the cut in those 3 examples is not at the same character count position

Sigil doesn't do the chopping. Sigil just sets the title of the window to the filename of the ePub you have open. Any chopping is OS dependent. On OS X for example the only time the title is truncated is if it is longer than the available area and the end is replaced with ... .

ah - I did not think of checking windows file name - I looked all thru the epub structure for where a truncated title might have been stored.

I guess I need to hop over to calibre forum but I don't think calibre will let me change the file name.

I suppose for new books I can fix the file name before importing into calibre but for existing files like these where I've already done many edits, its trickier.

I suppose save to disc, delete from calibre library, edit file name - add book to calibre would work.

but would it not be better (future) design to use the epub title & author fields, not the windows file name. that is what ADE does if I open the book in ADE.

You can't. Calibre intentionally truncates so the full page is a maximum of 255 characters. Not all filesystems support paths longer than 255 so there is a hard limit within calibre.

Many people have multiple versions of a book open in different Sigil windows for testing various things. It's easier to tell which file is open by using the file name. If the title and author was used every window would have the same name.

255 is more than enough for the examples I quoted. even 128 would be sufficient

excellent 2nd point though - I'd not thought of that.

The 255 is including the full path names of all of the directories.

the path name take a significant chunk of 255 - quite an overhead -
default location for a book in calibre library in Win 7 is
C:/users/user name/my Documents/calibre library/author_name/book_name/filename

You have control over at least 2 of those
Get a shorter user name
Pick a shorter name for your Library

Option 3 is to put the library on a different drive so it is easy to be close to the root.

1."dad" is pretty short already !

2.sure I could, & I could move it - just commenting on the default settings

3. ditto - but I like to stay with Microsoft storage logic of keeping documents in the my documents folder

You could still leave it in the existing folder; just use the SUBST command.

In a command shell type

SUBST Q: C:\Users\Documents\Dad

From here on, Q:\ will be the same location as C:\Users\Documents\Dad
