Buy content from other than Sony?

This is sorta a multi-part question. Since there exist a lot of tools for conversion from other formats, does that actually effectively increase the range of places we can purchase books from? Or are most of them heavily DRM'd so that we are still locked in as much as them?

If they aren't heavily DRM'd, what other sites are good places for buying from? Or even what formats should I seek out as being commonly not DRM enabled etc to shop at?

Thanks!

If your Into SF then one good place is Baen.com Multiple formats to choose from and although the Sony format is not currently available the text format is and can easily be read as is or converted. They have a large amount of free downloads availabe as well.

If I can get a file to RTF format, I can do whatever I want with it. I tend to look to purchase files that I can get to RTF format, except for things I don't believe I'll care to read more than once, but that's a special case and not really on point.

MS Reader (.lit) format books convert quite nicely & easily to Reader (.lrf) format. Of course that depends on how you feel about breaking DRM.

Fictionwise offers some (all?) of their Multiformat titles in .lrf

Just for academic reasons, and not because I would ever do it... what steps (what tools) would you use the convert a drm'ed .lit to a Sony format?

The first tool you need is convertLIT, which can be found through Google. You also download libprs500, which can also be found through Google.

Beyond that, you'll have to look elsewhere, I'm afraid. MobileRead has a well established policy of not ... directly supporting DRM circumvention.
