Renaming telephone apps

I received my second Pocket Edge from Woot today. It's seems to be a brand new unit. I started it up after charging and went thru the 4 touch dance which worked perfectly.

Once that was done, I downloaded the slightly upgraded version of Ermine - 1.01 which also downloaded and installed perfectly.

Now I'm trying to remember how I got ES Explorer to let me rename the 2 telephone related files to *.bak from *.apk. I'm coming up with a blank as to how I did it. I think I'm supposed to become a super user, but I've forgotten how. Any help out there?

I suggest not to touch them: you gain nothing, but might get into troubles.

Seconded.

Too many people are having big trouble by messing with system files for little gain.

Syclone, I have a suggestion - with two PE's one modified and one unmodified, you're in a perfect position to find out if the various tweeks make a significant difference. If they do and you feel it warrants the risk, proceed. Now having said that - a better tablet for tweeking is the Nook Color. There you can boot from sd, if things go awry - remove sd and you're back to stock. With the PE a brick is a brick. I've done the PE tweeks and found it helps but not everyone may have the same results. (watch out for lcd density and wifi scan interval though). Echo - messing up build.prop can be disastrous.

Why not go to 2.2/Froyo?

To rename system files you need to root the gadget (zRoot); use RootExplorer to mount / as r+w, then long-touch each file to pull up the menu.

Renaming telephony.apk and phone.apk can extend battery life per what I've been reading. I was hopeful that reverting these files to their original names would let me register my gadget with Google (ie, Android Market access!) but so far no joy.

Thanks everyone! I checked the running apps that were drawing battery power on PE #2 and Phone.apk and Telephony.apk didn't appear, even thought both apps appear in the apps directory. This may be one of the mods to bring the OS up to Ermine 1.01. We'll see over the next few weeks how the two units perform in relation to each other. PE #2 has to go thru some discharge/recharge cycles before it reaches full battery capacity.

Time will tell.

Letting it drain completely and then recharging to 100%? How many times do you recommend and what are the advantages? Thanks!

syclone - are both PE's running the same version of ermine? I haven't been keeping up with that the 1.01 thread. I don't know exactly what changes they made. It'll interesting to see the difference if have .09vs1.01. I found the battery graph apk from market to be useful in tracking discharge over time. The battery use info from PE settings I found questionable at best. Keep us informed I'll be interested in learning your results.

I noticed that you get more detailed power usage info (and I believe more accurate info) by going to the "Spare Parts" app instead of the power statistics in the settings page. I'm convinced that "cell standby" power usage is erroneous.

Thanks for the "spare Parts" info. You're right, it's quite detailed

syclone - I've decided to restore phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk and join the battery life experiment. I'm considering 2 apps to monitor battery discharge over time - battery monitor widget and battery graph. I'm going to charge overnight, kill wifi, autosync, and any other apps I can and let it run for 4 to 6 hrs and note %discharge. Rename apps and repeat. Can you or anyone else think of anything else to minimize background power drain during this run? I'm still running ermine 0.9. By the way Battery usage in about eDGe showed edge idle as 86% of battery use when I restored the 2 apps - what a crock.
