Help please (new ereader owner)

Hi there all,

I'm sure there have been numerous posts like this, but I can't find them!

I have just bought a Sony PRS650, and have purchased my first ebook (36 Arguments for the Existence of God). I have a few books that I could buy, but can see the cost spiralling out of control... I need some guidance on acquiring some books for limited cost.

Can anyone recommend cheap ebook stores, or point me in the direction of some ways of doing torrent type stuff - I'm a complete novice.

The books that I am interested in at the moment are anything by Irvin D. Yalom, Craig Newnes, David Smail ... (not massively popular, but not obscure either)

Any help would be appreciated x

(I should add that I'm in the UK, so stores will need to allow me to buy from here)

Of course I would always start with MR's Ebooks section (they have many of Gutenberg's books but done nicer).
Here is a link to additional resources (Free and shops)

Some U. K. public library systems have downloadable ebooks - see if yours is one of those.

Heya, congrats and welcome to MR!

Just a friendly word of advice - while new here myself, I am quite sure that MR does not tolerate discussions about acquiring ebooks illegally, though means such as torrents [unless they are free books from the publishers/authors, etc...]. Possibly a ban-able offense - I would steer clear of such discussions.

'Sides, there are plenty of legit, free books available for all our enjoyment and I am sure folks will help suggest stuff for you

cheers,
-les

Thanks guys :)

Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like with my current list I'll have to buy them - two are too obscure for ebooking, the other seems to be unavailable via all the other free options.

We have ebooks available via the library system but they're the newest popular novels. It seems that all free ebooks are really old, I've downloaded a couple for future use. I guess old Psychology books are a bit irrelevant - Freud isn't going to help me much with my studies

Thanks guys anyway - I'll just limit myself to one a month or something!

Books from the Kobo bookstore (kobobooks.com) work on the Sony. Just make sure to download the Adobe DRM file and you'll be okay to go. You can even use the Kobo desktop software to sync your Kobo ebooks onto your Sony eReader.

The prices are similar as other bookstores, but Kobo offers coupons. If you have a look in the Kobo forum, you'll find a thread that's usually updated with the lastest coupon offers.

LOL, I was just about to buy from Kobo but I need a credit card (Why won't everywhere just do Debit or at least PayPal?). Back to Waterstones and WHSmith for me, but I'll go through that Wiki list too before I buy. Thanks again

Not all inclusive but has a search engine and can give you some options you might
have overlooked.

I just checked out The Singapore Library quickly and it appears foreigners need a passport number to become a member. I'm outta luck there.

I have to say that put me off too... It sounds like you need to be physically in a library as well if you're a foreigner...

Nah, you just give a 7-digit number, ANY number and you'll be fine. How should they be able to tell the difference? They are asking for a passport no. which changes every few years, when you get a new one. They don't ask for your social security number. Lots of folks here just made up a number.

Anyway I don't understand this, when registering in your local library you have to bring your ID, too. At least here.

Are debit cards different in England than they are here in the US? I use a debit card to purchase from Kobo.
